Racing Simulators Vs. Arcade Racers

With the right setup and real world interest racing simulators can be very addictive and satisfying.

I agree to a degree that a 30 minute session of arcade is more satisfying than 30 minutes of simulated driving as simulated driving requires time and investment to be great.

I'm much more into simulators than Arcade racers, as I am a real world track racing boytjie :)

Rfactor, IRacer etc. Arcade racers just appeal to a wider audience. Wider audience = more money.

That Doesn't mean that I don't play arcade / semi sim games, as I enjoy games like Need for speed, Dirt etc. I just Prefer Simulators.

WE had a marathon race in Rfactor on the Nurburgring Nordshleife 20.8KM track which lasted over 3 Hours :). Was freaken epic

Arcade vs Simulation is like comparing Realtime vs Turn-based. It really depends on what type of gamer you are.

Have good memories of both - Loved GT3 - dont know how I managed to finished it... and then Need for speed: Most Wanted was awesome

Simulators are Boring
If I wanted to control a car that has realistic physics and handling, with amazing graphics, I would go and drive my car around the block a few times. It would be the most accurate, real driving experience I could have. And let’s face it; realistic driving simulators are about one step away from Traffic Jam: The Game, where you have to fight through rush hour traffic to get to an important interview on time. No thanks.

I can argue this point as I am a huge Racing fanboi, if I go to a game expo the first thing I look for are the racing simulations. I have bought F1 since the days of Grand Prix 2 and followed it ever since. I went out and bought GT 5 Prologue the second day it came out as I was more interested in being able to play around with the little tweaks here and there.

Simulations may be boring for some unless you are really dedicated to cars, performance and just that little bit extra realism. Yes some of us can't afford to go for a spin in the BMW M3 or the new 5 series, but you get to hear and see what it is like to drive the car.

Simulations give you a taste as to how a car should be in a racing sim taking into account that you can add the certain touches like dropping the suspension, adding torque, increasing the KW to adjusting your tires should you end up taking your car off road.

Another Racing Sim to mention is V8 Superstars I spent a good couple hours hooked on that game as I loved how the cars sounded and moved.

While I agree that Arcade racers are more fun, these kind of articles are getting really tiresome....

snorz-ville, what a one sided article

Oh and Quake and Unreal totally own and sell better then true-er to life titles like MW2 or BC2...

Being able to drive your car around the block a few times may be fine for you, but I don't own an R8, and would like to know what it would feel like, without the insurance hassles.

What a genre Fanboi

PS> Burnout 3 = greatest game ever, but I'm not beyond racing around Nurburgring in a Mini Cooper in GT4 just for giggles.

I can't necessarily agree. I find pleasure in a good game, regardless of what it is categorised as. I enjoy Arcade Racers, plenty, but I also loved some of the older Gran Turismo games, and Forza games! So if the game is well made and keeps me entertained, I am all for it.

I think a few games get the balance between the 2 just right. Forza 3 is a prime example of pulling in the arcade crowd while still having the option of upping the "simulation-ness" for the hardcore crowd. All games need to be like Forza 3, imho... :D
