rAge 2010 announced

Well nag organizes it and to be fair they are a bunch of lazy people.

What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Also, I think you have absolutely no idea how an expo is organised and run.

To everyone else - after last year's expo, I was commissioned to trawl the intertronz for a week or so, compiling all the complaints about it, and suggestions for this year. It was a pretty extensive report.

Having said that, however, I do get the impression sometimes that gamers are just fucking impossible to please. It's like you expect nothing short of a religious experience. It's a gaming expo, not transcendence.

I've exhibited at rAge, been an event organizer at rAge and Lanned at rAge
I can honestly say that putting something like this together is no small feat, the NAG guys REALLY try their level best to provide everyone with everything they need in all aspects.
It's an awesome event, but one has to keep in mind that the last rAge was hampered by the state of the industry, something that is still not resolved yet.

As mentioned though, the food is terrible, but thats the Dome's problem not NAG's

Now now, calm down. People are entitled to their opinions.

To avoid people expecting a religious experience, don't market it as if it were the 2nd coming!

The food is terrible and expensive. The place does stink of 1200 gamers who have not showered in two days. The last two shows have been pretty dull and non-exciting. Valid points of people not expecting a religious experience, merely value for their money.

Not when they're ignorant, stupid "opinions" that insult other people.

Again, it's a game expo. I don't know what people are expecting, but apparently it's not, you know, games. Because I've noticed loads of games at rAge.

Complain to the Dome. The organisers have absolutely no control over this - using the in-house vendors is part of the contract.

The place does stink of 1200 gamers who have not showered in two days.

So, what do you suggest? That the organisers hire a hygiene inspection crew, and send people home for mandatory showers? I agree it's revolting; it's also beyond the organisers' control.

The last two shows have been pretty dull and non-exciting. Valid points of people not expecting a religious experience, merely value for their money.

And yet, plenty of people seem to enjoy the expo. So maybe there's something to be said for people expecting too much? It's a R50 entry ticket - it's hardly necessitating a second mortgage or anything.

As quoted from www.rageexpo.co.za, "1-3 October 2010 will see the eighth rAge expo blow the roof off the Coca-Cola Dome in Gauteng. rAge is the uncontested 800-pound gorilla of the interactive entertainment experience in South Africa. It’s a place where exhibitors do important business, and retailers take advantage of the tremendous spending power of the entertainment technology and gaming consumer."

Sounds like more than just a game expo. It's just that you expect more wow factors. More shiny lights, or flashy signs or something. Don't ask me what precisely, because it's not my show, but it doesn't feel big enough.

To be fair, I'd forgotten that the food vendors etc are actually part of the domes' contracts etc and nothing to do with the organisers.

Shower thing, I don't know, but it is really nasty. Maybe ask the gym across the road if the people can't purchase a voucher or something to use the showers? Make a deal with them or something. Just a thought. R50 for the expo isn't terrible, but R350 for the LAN does seem to be getting a touch expensive. Bear in mind plenty okes come from across the country and that has also gone up in cost. Then you still need to eat, drink and whatever else.

PS Might want to correct the typo on the rAge site. blow=below.

Well have you seen the your magazine lately. It is sloppy and really has gone downhill. And the expo is nothing special.

And I really do hope rage is a success this year and hope it is something to be remembered.

Please elaborate. And if you're going to bitch about the binding, how about convincing the magazine's advertisers that the recession is now obviously completely over, and everyone can go back to pushing all their new loads of money back into NAG? Or would you prefer to pay R10 extra on the cover price for a spine?

I must say, and it's more than just this particular discussion, but the way gamers expect everything plus the fucking universe is really starting to annoy me. All they do is complain, complain, complain.

Don't say the recession is over just yet
There are a few downward trends that are worrying on International markets

Back on Topic, as this is not a BASH NAG thread,Should you have complaints about the magazine I suggest you write them a letter.
I would suggest that anyone who is interested in gaming try and attend the show, of only for the Saturday
I think there should be a fair turnout this year and you can always meet me at the GH Stage so that I may proceed in melting off your face with 7 kinds of smoke, oh and some awesome too

Is that not one of they ways in which things are improved? Listening to complaints? but if they annoy you so much, then stop reading them.

Things are improved through constructive criticism. Saying, "it sucks lol don't bother" isn't constructive criticism.

I mean, specifically on the NAG topic, how many of the people saying the mag is shit now (a sentiment I've seen around this forum more than once) have bothered writing up some constructive criticism and sending it to the editor? But apparently it's just so much easier to say it's shit on forums instead.

I've only been to one rAge because the Dome really isn't within my driving distance, but for what I paid I did enjoy it. However, like every expo, you have to have a lot of money to really enjoy it. I remember seeing some awesome things but I simply couldn't afford them. It was also a bit of a mission standing in queues to play one or two demos. Also felt a bit weird that I was one of the only girls there who wasn't clad in a bikini, but hey, times are changing (although it would be nice to see some pecks walking around with a stack of NAG).

That said, it can only get better with time so NAG should definitely keep it up. I'd rather there be a rAge than there not be one, after all.

Actually, I was quite surprised by the number of female attendees last year. OUR RANKS GROW.
Or we're just climbing out the closets. (well, that's what it felt like for me at least at my first rAge)

Seriously considering flying down to JHB for this one though so I hope it's worth it.

I do not buy the mag anymore. The content is not very exciting the reviews are meh and just meh. Maybe it has to do with the fact I have access to the net and nothing I read in the mag is new to me. If thats the case I am in the wrong. And then I apologize. I was a avid reader since the first issue.

Maybe I am just a bit sad that rage is not exciting anymore:( Every year I was excited for rage until now. And every month I could barley wait for the nag to hit the shelves. Maybe I am jaded.

Ok I read what I posted and I sound like a asshole.

I skip every other year, and since I missed last year, I will check this one out.

Like many here I find the experience agitating, but I know that has largely to do with me on some levels. I just wish the vendors selling their wares would come up with some better deals. Some have mentioned already that all you get are the SAME INSTORE prices WTF!! I might as well just head over to their stores and pickup what I want without the agitation of the crowds at rAge.

Azimuth is right that we should not expect more than a SA gaming Expo, but DenSweep is also correct stating that is pretty much slated as the second coming each year (which I guess makes business sense so yeah).

Most years I go with the intent to spend, only to the stalls overrun and impossible to navigate. I then promptly leave the Expo and find it elsewhere. I have the same reservations with Icon and other 'Geek' related Expos in SA, but hey, we are are a third world country, what can we expect? Anything is better than nothing in most cases.

I'm with Azimuth on this ... the amount of negativity in this thread is amazing beyond belief. I've never been to rAge, I've been wanting to attend for 4 or 5 years now ... and I have a load of people in here pissing on my batteries. Typically South African really.

And I love how you say "your mag". Azi, NAG just became yours. Be proud.

For those of you who are attending (and this without the intention of finding something to moan about) - send me a PM beforehand - maybe we can get together - I'm part of a group of 6 peeps going. Maybe we can complain about the food together too. Get in the spirit and all that :p

The funny thing is it seems more and more people are attending :p
So despite all the negativity tons of people are loving it.

I miss the Anime screenings they used to have. Or have I not been seeing them?
