Creative director discusses the game's massive size.

Rage will be three discs on Xbox 360 and an 8GB install on PlayStation 3, creative director Tim Willits has confirmed.

In an interview at this weekend's Eurogamer Expo, Willits told Digital Foundry about working with Sony to make that size manageable.

"Sony was great. Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off," he said. "What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same. Some of the other systems you have... should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it's very nice."

As for Xbox 360, the game will span multiple discs, but Willits says not to worry about having space for all of them on your hard drive.

"We recommend installing the game to the hard drive, but you don't need to install all three discs," he said. "If you don't have the space available on your hard drive, don't stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you're done, uninstall and install disc two. You don't really need to install the multiplayer disc if you're really tight on hard disk space."

Willits also discussed the process of making the game for three systems.

"There are more similarities between them than most people realize, so they developed a codebase that would take care of these multi-core systems," Willits said. "It makes a lot more sense than taking on old technology and shoving it into a modern day console and then having to multi-thread. So the basic gamecode is the same, the basic engine is the same and it's only the graphical APIs, and a few sound things that are really different on all the three systems, which is really nice."

The full interview is available at Digital Foundry.

Rage hits PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on October 4.

Guess ul just have to get the new model..:P And yoh.. Seems all new games are gna start coming out with more than one cd.. Well. That is until they make CDs that can hold more data.. But this is awesome.. Means the game is Gna be looong..:D

Well. That is until they make CDs that can hold more data..
They have it's called DVD, they have even replaced that with Blu-Ray..

I'm sorry I could not resist :p

rAge has the large installs and multi disks due to the mega textures they using. Microsoft recently released a new update for the 360 that allows the current DVD 9 disks to carry up to an additional 1 gig of data.
But yes you are right it seems that more and more games will start using multiple disks on the 360. Can't say I'm phased by it though.

Well considering the sheer epicness of this titles (having gotting a good 20min gameplay @ eurogamer Expo) It comes as no surprise that is it huge.

I'll likely be getting this for PC anyway, but it's good to see them using the hard drive. Loading off the disc can be quite slow.

I hear you there but like the article states, what about the guys with the smaller Hard drives?
Having to install 3 disks at a time? Not cool :(.

Didn't the article say you can install disc 1 and play. Then get rid of it and install disc 2 and play. And people don't have to install the MP disc.

Good stuff. Luckily my xbox HD is big enough. Only problem I have is that it releases on the same day as Dark Souls... I need money. :(

jeez 3 disks! reminds me of the old PC days when some games were 7 cd's big. ....but where's disk 5, aw man!

Will the 2 extra disks affect the cost? probably. probably worth it.

Man, all these new xbox titles are looking pretty huge lately! LA Noire was pretty big and was also 3 discs, looks like it's becoming a trend to bring out Xbox games on more than 1 disc these days :D

multiple disc based games isnt something new so i honestly dont know why fanbois always complain about it,I remember back in the day final fantasy IX was on 4 discs and the shenmue games on the dreamcast also spanned multiple discs, the reality is disc swapping has been common practice on almost every console since the 5th generation so people should have learned to live with it by now and the funny part is they havent.
