Rage no MP: Nerd Rage ?

The Piper
Shacknews: Why not a shooter for multiplayer?

Jason Kim: It wasn't an answer that we came up with easily. There were of course many people internally who said, "Well, we have to do competitive multiplayer because we're id." And, if you go back even further, when we went about making Rage, we really weren't making Rage; we were making something else. Then, as the technology evolved...when we start making a game, John says, "okay, that's old tech, we're making new stuff and we have to figure out how to make a game around all that." So we have a high level goal at the start, as we start iterating through all that stuff. The question was raised, "are we really exploiting this technology to its fullest?" and when the answer was "no," we decided "okay, what are we going to do?" and that's how Rage came about.

Do every game have to have MP ? funny when you think about Valve stating SP is dead or very much shelved for them and here comes ID with "just" SP.

Personally I would like games like Witcher, Oblivion, Dragon age to have mp. Problem is then one aspect of the game will have to make up for that... or is that the whole truth ? What happened to all of the games "of my time" that came with mp as standard. I felt no lack in Buldars Gate for example. The mp was great. The IP was great. How do you share your adventure without mp ?

Currently sitting here playing these AAA titles, but I can't mp them. Enjoying my hearts content out with DOA, but I only see pc playing with me. Is excluding mp from sp or sp from mp just an excuse these days ? I just can't help to directly think of release now, we will patch it later mentality that's so ripe.

not every game needs mp. in fact we need more SP only games

Obviously, but imho mp extends some games life time by a lot vs only being able to play with yourself. It's a bit of being kept in your cave by pretty pictures where as it would have been nice to have a friend over, play and be merry.

:e
Rage will be a test if ID has pickedup the dropped ball. Maybe Bethesda has saved them, time will sure tell.

Their previous releases was ok, not great. Tim Sweeny so far has matched and surpassed JC where as He thought his engines was the best forever.

its a pity though, it could have been the new Quake, I was never an UT fan...

 UT was awesome.

Who cares if it does not have mp. Are there not enough games to satisfy peoples mp needs.

Certain games don't need mp

RE5 competitive multiplayer is useless/ Great co-op game :)
Dead Space 2 multiplayer was nothing special/ Awesome SP :)

I didn't expect Rage to have multiplayer, but I think I read somewhere it has co-op? Is this correct?

I would prefer an epic single player. Instead of a good single player with MP. Crysis 2 is a perfect example of a SP game that could have been epic, but then they gave it Less SP attention and tried making it more MP. I would have like to see a more Epice massive scale single player campaign rather than MP.

Also a big RPG fan so that might be one of the reasons I like SP more.

These are proof however that you don't need MP; Mass Effect, Dragone Age, Metro 2033, Elder Scrolls, Risen, FallOut, Half Life (1)(2)(2.1)(2.2), Portal, Deus Ex, Batman: Arkham Asylum, StarWars: Knight Of The Old Republic(Sith Lords), Diablo, Duke Nukem. All I can think of right now, but these are proof you don't always need MP just make sure you SP has a strong Story, and build around that.

My 2cents

Also can wait for Rage, looks Pazaszzzzzz.
Might give my new rig a go, because crysis 2 did not do it this time. Was like play on a 360 on my pc, Ooober fail.

just as an aside, Rage previews list the game's main campaign as being 12 hours long, while the game fills 2 dvd's.

so plenty of side quests?

I don't see why people have a reason to RAGE. Lol... Seriously, who came up with the idea that all games must have multiplayer?

I didn't know that.

I blame COD for the thought that you need MP all the time.

I agree 100%. But then the single player must at least have some replay value and there would be no excuse for mishaps or stuffups as they devoted all their efforts towards it.

Some games however just need the mp element. Just imagine if Diablo (3) didn't have mp (which it obviously will), Prophet would probably have a heart attack.

Others like Alan Wake, Heavy Rain etc. are just not suited to it.

so far we have:
a) lan promotes piracy
b) not every game needs mp
c) who cares if it doesn't have mp
d) we need more sp and less mp

That's not very convincing.

Add the following ?:
d) less $$$ for the company
e) we too lazy to write proper net code
f) no mp means no sharing of what could have been great adventure (ex. co-op dragon age)
g) (in case of id) we are known for our stellar mp net code, well we thought so since quake 3 arena, but sorry we going softies and staying with sp only. I mean we are now bethesda actually and they don't do sp >.<

I'll re-iterate. It is not just about whether or not SP is great without MP. Sure SP has it's strong points, but as Crzwaco said why not just add lan, well at least for co-op/d!match. That's what made the old hack-n-slash/fps great.

Nowadays it seems that one dev house is screaming NO to SP or NO to MP, mixed with FUCK we add MP we will have sucky SP. I can understand this from CDProjeckts point of view they are not a big dev house, but ID is known for bringing out something proper (ok well they used to be) in the MP realm. Now they are this irritating stop kakker dog, dodging the bullets and... well I don't <insert something here>.

Opinion:
In the end it seems that most people would just opt for being a cave nerd who never wants to share some adventure or experience with other players and that it seems breeds the thinking of MP is bad, especially in RPG games.
