rAge - Thoughts

Solitude

Mr. Nice Guy
Here's what I thought of rAge. I'd love to hear what you guys thought as well.

Positives
- The expo itself was fun and even though I didn't stay as long as I thought I would it was worth going.
- Some of the stands were outstanding and if you are a bargain hunter then you are bound to get something that you like for cheap. Portal 2 was in the one place available as part of a Buy 2 games for @99 deal. Wow!
- The booth ladies are all beautiful.
- I was amazed at the art that was on show at the artist section. Those people are seriously talented.
- There was a showing of the new Tomb Raider by the Samsung store. Had to stand in a queue for about half an hour to see but it was worth it. The gameplay looks awesome and it's a must have title.
- The 3D televisions on show really are something. It must surely change the whole gaming experience.
- There were people promoting this online chess game thing. Took flier, can't remember name but will give it a try. I think it's great that chess can still feature at a gaming expo. :)

Negatives
- Guild Wars 2 didn't look all that great. It looks like just another MMO and I don't know, I was just expecting more from it after all the hype.
- I didn't have the guts to chat with Pippa! Don't know what's wrong with me. Stupid Solitude, stupid. She really is beautiful though. :D
- Telkom was there, telling people about their amazing ADSL and whatnot. I want ADSL but I don't ever want to use them again. They were going on about their amazing 4mb speeds. Oh please Telkom, just go away.
- I missed everything Diablo III related unfortunately and I was looking forward to that.
- I was hoping for a Desktop Dungeons stand but no such luck. Would have hoped that the award winners would go show off their game. It was probably too expensive for an indie developer but then I wish someone would have sponsored them.
- It was the ideal time for Microsoft to show off their Windows Phone 7 XBox Live features but I didn't see anything of that either. Just after the Mango release at a game show? Sheesh if I was a marketing person for Microsoft gaming then I would have jumped at getting an awesome stand ready to show that off.

What's your thoughts?

Haven't been there yet...but I will be going tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up, I'll definitely go check out some of your listed "positives".

I know from past experience every year its the same thing. Couple of new games here and there, but most leave you disappointed and nothing you can't see on youtube.

+1 to that
Its the same thing every year, parking is a nightmare, Long lines to get in..Meh
Think Sexpo is a much better waste of my time :D

Just a heads up, the desktop dungeons guys will be there tomorrow. They are giving a talk about indie games :)

Make A Rage Roadshow!! ( Road Rage? ):D go to every city with a convention center! logistical nightmare I suppose it would be though. Im not giong all the way to JHB for a LAN, unfortunate.:(

Was there today. Same as last year. Way to many people. You can hardly move. But yeah worth a walk around.

I found sexpo boring as well :(. I dunno, all these expos having becoming a big shopping market, rather than an EXHIBITION. There were lots of places selling toys and flicks, and the only things that were interesting was the hypnotist and the smoking area.

I think you need to sit down and actually get some game-time in before you can come to any conclusion about it - based on all the reports we've been getting from PAX and Gamescom and other shows NC's been at, people have been raving about it from the get go.

All we got was a 10 minute demo video - I still think GW2 is going to blow everything else out of the water.

There was no D3 at rAge. Also no rage at rage.

However, I would call this rAge a far cry from past events. Playable code for most of the unreleased games. Couple devs came to talk about their games on the main stage. Same old hardware guys are there each year, but a lot of them had great deals going.

Mango would not be at the show as vodacom is the only network officially supplying WP7 devices and they clueless as to when they will release it locally.

Megarom and EA had great stands. lots of stations to play with.

My biggest gripe, was the exhibitors allowing under aged kids to play M rated games.

Hmmm...this was my shortest rAge experience to date. Got in, bought some stuff from everywhere, checked out the games and hardware that I wanted to see...and then left. Was there for just under 4 hours.

It was just FAR too busy. Which is uncomfortable and all, but I guess that is a good thing in a sense...maybe they should investigate a bigger venue? Don't know where else this event can be handled, but I was starting to feel a little claustrophobic in there.

I also don't mind the games that were there on playable code, I think they were actually quite cool.

I hope you are right shadowfox. I suppose you saw the same thing as I did, a lady from some other country on stage, talking about the game as someone plays it. I probably watched about 5 minutes before I lost interest. So I hope that it does end up being awesome.

Hmm, wasn't there supposed to be Diablo III footage or gameplay shown at the main stage? I don't know, I missed it completely.

As for Mango devices, both 8ta and Cell C also sell WP7 phones. I already got my Mango update. However it would have been a great opportunity for Microsoft to show off the phones. They showed it off at DevDays earlier in the year and since then I've been hooked. If they did something similar at rAge then more people would have been hooked.

Did you go watch the Tomb Raider gameplay at the Samsung stand? Man, I was so impressed. :)

+1 on that.

Friday was okay, but on Saturday it was almost impossible to move in there. Nevermind the fight to get parking.

This year's rAge was definitely busier than last year by a long shot, but I was way more comfortable on the Friday - my main reason for being there on the Saturday was to go see my friends at the cosplay comp.
