Raspberry Pi

Cobalt

Hey guys,

Anyone ordered one of these yet? I've followed the Pi for awhile now and love the idea. I dig tinkering with hardware and have always wanted to build a small capable HTPC which can output HD.

Was wondering where the best place to order is as I here the waiting period can be a couple of weeks to months.

Thanks.

P.s. post your ideas of what you want to do with it/any builds youve put together.

Link for those of you that have no idea what im rambling on about :-)

Got one last year - had great fun building a case out of spare Lego.

Got it up and running and then ran out of time to play with it, so it's now lying dormant on the shelf :o

I have one, running Raspbian on it, with Transmission (torrent client) and Playstation Media Server.

This means that I can have the tiny Pi on all day long, downloading and streaming movies to the PS3 in the TV room. Then I don't have to leave my gaming PC on 24/7, which is a win!

Friend of mine once said he was planning on getting one. I'll find out if he did, if he didnt then haaties he got a baby now lol.

I've wanted one of these for a while now. It's just really annoying that you have to wait so long for new stock to arrive. I wish you could get them retail, that would be nice. The things I've seen people do with them, it's really an awesome piece of tech. Personally, if I got one, I would use it for XBMC streaming and what not :)

Cobalt - is that a spider or a star fish (your avatar). My eyes seem to be deceiving me.

If you order it from RS Componets (rs-online) you should get it within 2 weeks.
And Android Mini is proving to be a major Pi competitor: http://www.ediseducation.com/compon...pc-in-the-classroom-for-computer-science.html

Here are some images I took of a Pi running XBMC

It is a handy little device should I want to automate things and connect components throughout the home.
One guy actually programmed one to remotely dim his lights and close his blinds from anywhere. The possibilities are endless.

I would use it as a handy media centre which connects and streams pictures, audio and video to the TV :)

funny, i saw a thread of it on mybb yesterday, read through it but seems like everyone posting there already knew what it was and what it done, so there was no real help...

...so my question, once i buy one and get a wifi dongle, what can i do with it and don't say "spreadsheets, word-processing, games and videos"

better yet, what do you do with it - except build a case (which come to think it will be pretty cool in its own way)

This should answer all your questions: http://www.raspberrypi.org/faqs

Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized PC. So yes, the general answer is "you can do things like spreadsheets, word-processing, games and videos" as with any other PC.

It comes with HDMI, USB ports, Ethernet, audio and Wifi.
It uses SD cards as storage media and you can load an ARM-based operating system on an SD card (usually some sort of Linux distro) such as XBMC, Raspbian, Debian or Arch-Linux
You can download the OS images from http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads

As for what more you can do with it, that depends on your coding skill and knowledge... I for one am busy with an automated downloader of my current anime shows, and plan to integrate it with XBMC to stream them to my TV.

If you ever want to tinker with electronics and robotics, you can have a look at Arduino rather, or use both Raspberry Pi and Arduino in conjunction with each other. Hypothetically, write a controller on the Pi with communicates with an Arduino board via wifi, to which you built a controller to dim the lights in your house.

I have to say, it's quite slow though... Wouldn't use it as a day to day PC... but it's fine for streaming and for downloading.

I agree with TBlaar, dont be disappointed with the speed, its not meant as a gaming MB. I find it quiet useful to pair up with the Arduino boards and run linux controlled robots ;)

Those of you using it as a media player, how do you control the thing

I want to setup for my parents to use but a keyboard ain't gonna cut it - need some kind of remote

Mine streams Media to the PS3 which I then use.

You could perhaps get XBMC running and then have that controlled by some kind of remote...

I have it running with raspbmc and a remote which was bought quite a while ago.

Thanks, what remote, where did you buy it and how much did it cost?

Do you have anything special to make the remote work? Is it blue tooth, infra red, wifi?

I'm sure you could just Google remotes that worked with the Raspberry Pi, should be a good place to start.

Normal infra red remote, bought it for R300+- and it has a little receiver that plugs into the usb.

Has anyone perhaps ordered a PI from RS Components in December and received it yet? I am still waiting on mine...

The orders only get shipped once every X months... so, all order in a, say, 3 month block, would be shipped at the same time. They do not ship individually directly after you ordered.
