Batman: Arkham Asylum (PC) - 8.5/10
I know I'm late to the party, but the game was available on a Humble Bundle, so...
Right, this game lets you play as Batman, trapped on Arkham Island, where the Joker, through an elaborate scheme he has put in place months ago, has taken over the island. He has organised for all the inmates at Blackrock Prison to be transported to Arkham Island as well, so he's not alone.
Since the beginning of early consoles, people have wanted to be Batman. Batman on the NES was good, on the SNES, not so good. But this version of the game REALLY let's you be Batman! Bat Claws, Batarangs, Explosive Gel and of course, swooping in with your giant cape to absolutely terrify the enemies.
The game is presented as a 3D, third-person action game, with some stealth elements. The storyline is reasonably linear, but the game allows you to revisit locations as often as you want, if you are going to try and look for those illusive clues that the Riddler has left around the place.
The best aspect of the game though, is the free-flow combat system. Rocksteady Games have designed a system that allows you to fluidly move, punch, counter-attack and dodge enemy attacks in a combat sequence. It might seem strange at first, but the system becomes second nature to you. Before too long, you will be taking on 10 enemies at a time, moving between them, taking them out without getting hit once. I cannot describe the feeling of satisfaction I get when I finish a big fight and I look at all the unconscious bodies around me. I usually look down and in my deepest Christian Bale voice, I say: "I'm Batman". Yeah, it's sad, I know.
The storyline is a little convoluted, but it is after all based on a comic book. I constantly felt the need to progress the story, and that is a good thing.
The cast includes some famous villains like Killer Croc, Scarecrow and Bane. The voice acting wasn't too bad either.
All in all, a very, well-rounded action game that I can highly recommend.
Now, to get started on Arkham City
