Shadow of Chernobyl

8/10

All it needs is no loading screens between areas. You have to walk through specific points to reach other parts of the map. Needed the use of vehicles too.
Otherwise its a perfect survival fps.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

I did just about everything there is to do in single player Dragon Age Inquisition and it took a very long time. It's the longest I've ever taken to finish a single player game. It took me months and I loved the journey. However I'm going to take a long rest before even considering the DLC.

Firstly, this game is huge. Don't even think of starting to play it if you don't have the time or are prepared to set aside a couple of weeks or months. The previous Dragon Age games aren't even half the size of this one. I didn't even touch multiplayer.

I enjoyed the story and the epicness of it all but I have to admit that the fighting gets a bit tedious. They could have had more story and less fighting and gathering resources. The game is exceptionally relaxing though and is probably a bit more casual than the previous games. It's also very easy. I played on normal and never had any problems. Except if you try and fight dragons before you get to the required level.

OOooooo and the dragons! They are amazing. Before you get to fight them they will fly over you or you'll find them sleeping or at one point you even find a dragon fighting a giant. And you can view at all from a distance and stay out of their way. It's things like that that I loved about Inquisition. It just felt so epic and so well thought out. It's truly high fantasy of the highest calibre.

It's definitely not a game for everyone. It's long, dialogue and mmo style fighting intensive with a lot of time wasters. It's my kind of game but I can see other people getting bored with it. Especially people looking for action. The action here is more of a casual mmo style fighting that won't appeal to everyone.

There's a huge variety of things to do though and some of the missions are really just astonishingly good. The characters are varied and well acted and as with previous Bioware games you get to become romantically involved with someone if you wish to do so.

I loved it and it was a great experience but I'm also a little glad that it's over now. Bioware, please, less filler content next time!

Batman Arkham Knight (PS4)

A good end to the trilogy. Loved how the brought the Joker back into it, very well written. Being a bit of a Batman geek I kinda clicked who the Knight was about midway through the game, but even then the revelation was well done.

Gameplay wise, the introduction of the batmobile and tank battles took me a few tries to get used to. Combat felt smooth and responsive, and with the enemy adapting to the way you play, in some scenarios I got my ass handed to me. Moving around the map was also relatively easy and fast, especially once upgraded.

Graphics was very good, though for some reason I did expect better. I did not experience any stutter or lag that I could notice. Sound was well reproduced and with my sound setup it was very immersive.

Achievements were quite fun to try for the most part, for example taking down cars, or gliding for 400m while 20m or less from the street. Though I did not go for the platinum on this one, I will keep my save file. Maybe something I'd try for one day when I have no other games to play. Managed a 96% completion rate, only leaving out the Riddler challenges as I found those to be quite a grind, except for the Catwoman Riddler challenges which weren't too bad.

Ending wise (there are two), it is left a bit open, so one can not help but wonder where they might take that.

All in all, a solid 9/10 and along with the Witcher 3, my top two games for this year (so far).

Crysis 2

crysis2_239251.jpg

You'd think that after quite a few years a game would be less buggy but it seems time has not been good to Crysis 2. I had issues where the game would start up with just a black screen. Apparently it doesn't play well with 120Mhz screens. There also were no options to set the fov so I had to set it in the console every time. There was this one area where I had to go through a window but just couldn't. After googling it it seems I just had to try and try and crouch and jump and try everything to get through that window. Eventually I did. Things like that.

But I did enjoy the actual game and the story. It's one of those games that gets better the further in you get. Definitely worth the play if you haven't yet.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

I have been looking for a good action hack and slash, and Shadow provided just that. With great graphics and a fighting system that feels natural with heavy punches and great finisher moves, it comes very close to the Batman Arkham games as far as gameplay. The story was... ok. I kept forgetting what I was supposed to be doing. I found myself stalking orcs and slaying them without being detected. Othertimes I would charge them head on, riding caracors and making a real nuisance of myself.

The stand-out feature is supposed to be the orc's ranking system where you can help certain orcs become war chiefs, or where you need to slay others to weaken their ranks. It works pretty well, even though it is a boss battle system where you can decide who the bosses are.

Overall the game was certainly worth my while. I picked it up for cheap and was not disappointed at all! Well worth a play from anyone who likes action, or even has a slight interest in Middle-earth games.

I played a fair bit of this the first time but got distracted and never finished it. Since you say it gets better the further you get in I'll keep it in mind and have another go at it sometime.

Crysis 3 is WAY better than Crysis 2 by the way, I highly recommend it.

Uncharted : Drake's Fortune Remastered (PS4)

Part 1 in the Nathan Drake collection. Finished this last night after starting it last week. Must say the game help up quite well for a 7-8 year old game. Bluepoint has done a sterling job of updating the visuals and gameplay. Felt a bit easier than my first time round way back then, but that could also be me being more used to playing with a controller over the years. Finished the game on hard, and barring a few areas where ammo can get low, I didn't not find it all that difficult. Challenges differ here and there a bit from the PS3 counterpart, with a few added trophies for the remastered version.

Solid 8/10 for me. Now on to # 2.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary - Halo Masterchief Collection

tmcc-halo-ce-anniversary-screenshot-1-640x360-c.jpg

I finally got to play my first Halo game! And I think I'm way too late to the party because Halo CE Anniversary feels old. Especially after having finished Crysis 2 not too long ago. In fact the game mostly reminds me of the Serious Sam games where you get bombarded with hordes of enemies all the time.

At times the game was a lot of fun. At other times I found it very difficult even while playing on Normal difficulty. You do get a great feeling of satisfaction when you get past a difficult bit though.

It's not a bad game at all. Games have just moved on a bit which is understandable since the original Halo came out in 2001. That's a long time ago!

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

I really enjoyed this game. I had a lot of fun playing through it, the shooting feels good and the whole western theme is pretty cool. What really impressed me was the quality of the voice acting, characterisation and the nuances of the plot. It had a good ending too!
The game looks good and nails the whole wild west atmosphere.

Verdict: Highly recommended. Worth playing if merely for the fact that it's a Western

Shadow Warrior (PS4) 8/10 - Modern take on the original, silly dialogue makes it's a pleasure to play. Slightly drawn out towards the end but great game all around. If you liked Hard Reset or Serious Sam them you will love Shadow Warrior.

Dying Light (PS4) - 7/10

Initially I struggled to get into the game, but decided to give it a fair go. Glad I did in the end as I quite enjoyed it. The first person view point took some time getting used to, as did the controls (find myself pressing Dying Light controls in Uncharted, causing quite a few deaths...).

Graphics is quite decent, though I have seen better on the PS4. Story wise it is a bit of been there, done that, but I enjoyed it, even though the voice acting felt a bit off to me. The main story is not so long, but the game is stretched quite a bit if you go for the side missions and challenges. I ended up playing about 24 hours or so.

Running around during the day is quite easy, though this changes during night. My heart was beating after my first chase at night with volatiles on my ass. Upgrading your skills does make the game a bit easy later on, so it's worthwhile getting the extras experience points doing side missions and challenges.

Due to my poor line I did not try the co-op future, so can't comment on that.

Valiant Hearts : The Great War (8/10)

STEAM --> "This is the story of crossed destinies and a broken love in a world torn apart.
All of them will try to survive the horror of the trenches following their faithful canine companion.
In Valiant Hearts, the lives of all these characters are inextricably drawn together over the course of the game. Friendship, love, sacrifice and tragedy befall each one as they help each other to retain their humanity against the horrors of war."

I really enjoyed the story that gets told, its rare that anything is available about WWI.
Each area gives you some more info regarding the battle that took place there, and you have to find a few items that was used by the people fighting there, after finding an item they would show you a picture of the item and a brief piece of info regarding it.

I really enjoyed the game.

Rise of the Tomb Raider 8.5/10

Got my copy on launch day, spent multiple hours on it until I got to the last chapter and decided to take a 3 week break. Finished it this evening.

Graphic detail is quite amazing and this was my first impression when I started the game.

There is improvement over the previous one, i liked the fact you can now swim in this one. Bring on the DLC in 2016!!

Alien: Isolation

Alien-Isolation-002.jpg

At the end of last year I got tired and lazy and stopped writing these little reviews. But it's a new year and with it comes some new energy. Ugh it sucks so much that it's back to work tomorrow. :(

Alien: Isolation makes me think of much milder Outlast set in space. It's not your typical action title and throughout most of the game you'll be hiding from the alien, androids or other humans. If you have some patience and you are willing to be stealthy then the game mechanics work exceptionally well. It's one of the better stealth games that I've played.

The atmosphere is also top notch and it made me watch the first two movies. They really captured the aesthetics of the films. The story is also good and I had a great time playing this game.

At times it feels a bit unfair since the alien always seem to know in which general area you are even if you don't make a sound. The game itself though wasn't too tough except for one bit close to the end where I died repeatedly which was frustrating.

Overall it's a must play if you like tense games and I can definitely recommend it.
