Sleeping Dogs (PS3)

What a game this is. Definitely recommended to fans of open world games such as GTA or Saints Row. I really loved everything about this game and it came as a big surprise. I wasn't even planning on buying it, but someone offered me a trade for my DS (which I NEVER used) and I'm really glad I decided to take it. The story and voice acting is top notch and the game is quite impressive visually. It might not be the most original game (borrows a lot from other sandbox titles), but who cares when you're having this much fun.

The fighting system is really the stand out feature here, IMO it is even better than that of the Batman games. It works almost the same and while Batman's is a bit more fluid, I really like how you can interact with almost anything in the environment during a fight in Sleeping Dogs. Even if something doesn't have a specific kill animation you can still use it to help you beat up your enemies. E.g. if you're close to a railing you can throw people over it or if you see a table you can smash someone's head against it. Soundtrack is also pretty good, especially the Roadrunner Records radio station. Loved driving around Hong Kong listening to Fear Factory, Devildriver, Killswitch Engage, etc. Finished the game last night, but I'm gonna spend some more time with it to finish up the sidequests, races, etc. and to try and get more of the collectibles so I can max out my character.

Definitely a 9.5/10 in my book.

Cool fighting and shooting but horrible free-roaming and driving.

Please elaborate on why you say horrible free-roaming and driving. I don't think I could disagree with you more. Sure, the cars don't handle very realistically or anything, but I thought the driving was damn near perfect, except for the physics being a bit "off". Also, you can jump from one car to another.

Free-roaming was awesome as well; cool collectibles that actually mean something. E.g. health shrines to increase health (obviously) or statues to learn fighting moves. Also really love the food stand people, man I want a pork bun so badly. "A man who never has a pork bun is never a whole man." :p

What is this I don't even :p

The only thing I don't like about the game is the gunplay, other than that it's got a great story, I love the mixture of the English and Mandarin in the dialogue and the combat is just awesome. The driving is cool as well, aside from those scooters which seem to have V12 engines in them :P
Also didn't intend buying it, it wasn't even on my radar, but I needed to trade Sniper Elite for something.

just finihsed Kane & Lynch 2. Not as good as the first one but still some good gunplay and really gritty I'd say 7/10.

Thanks to Wlad im definitiley getting Sleeping Dogs now. Love love love free roam games GTA style.

The Walking Dead Episodes by Telltale Games 9/10. I'm really enjoying the new mechanics to this point and click adventure.

Sleeping Dogs. 7/10

Pretty fun open-world sandbox. The city is a bit small and uniform and gets boring and the story isn't any special. Was a nice way to pass time though, but can't compare to GTA:SA/IV and Just Cause 2.

Did you play Saints Row The 3rd? Was it better?
Need to decide which one to get

You left out the best part: karaoke! :D

Sleeping Dogs is far more serious in tone and setting. Saints Row has dildos as weapons and funny costumes. Depends what you're in the mood for. I enjoyed them both, but Sleeping Dogs has Tom Wilkinson in it.

Spec ops 9/10

Took one point off bec of the controls. But what a disturbing game. It may look like a shooter but its really a survival horror. Game makes you questions your actions. You feel near the end so disconnected. Great game. First game ever to make me think what am I doing why am I here:p

Ok I will tell you why : I don't like the car models, scooters have the same torque as a 1000cc speedbike, the roads are as empty as a wasteland, and comparing the overall feel of the world to, lets say, GTA 4, it feels very small and cheap. But what annoys me the most is when I start accelerating in a car , the car starts kind of lagging behind, it feels like it stays on one spot for a split second and then goes forward. That's just my experience of the game, not saying you will have the same .

What version did you play if you don't mind my asking? I am playing on PS3 and I haven't really experienced the empty streets that much, no more than what happens in almost any GTA game/Saints Row where the streets go completely empty sometimes, but it really didn't happen all that often. Yes, the scooter does have a lot of torque, but I really don't care. I don't expect simulator accurate engines or handling in an open world game, especially not one where the most effort has clearly been put into the great story and awesome melee fighting system. I also can't say that I felt like the world was particularly small or "cheap". Sure, it's not as big as Panau Island (Just Cause 2) or Liberty City, but it felt just right for the length of the game and even after finishing it I am still enjoying driving around looking for collectibles. Guess our experiences were very different then, but to each his own ...

@Murph. Thanks for reminding me about the karaoke. I really liked the karaoke in this game for some reason, might be from playing a lot of Yakuza, and I really enjoyed 'singing' classics like "Take on Me", "All Out of Love" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", etc.

Sleeping Dogs (PC) - Really happy with how it turned out - the aesthetic is great and really makes you feel like you are in Hong Kong. The hand to hand combat is very smooth and feels great, something that very few open world action games succeed in. Graphically it lacks a bit but sheer amount of detail in the world and objects make up for that. The driving is arcadey and a lot of fun overall, pretty much all of the vehicles give you a great sense of speed which is something even some actual racing games fail to do.

The voice acting on the main character is pretty good, but most civilians and some side characters' voices are really cheesy. Another one of its flaws are the controls, not as much the keys (since they can be rebound) as the lack thereof - like most console ports (Consoles only having a certain amount of buttons) certain keys preform more than one action which can become really annoying, the spacebar key, for example, acts as both sprint and vaulting over objects, ultimately leading to your death when running up a outdoors staircase.

8/10

Sleeping Dogs - 8/10

What a great game! I enjoyed this more than I did GTA IV. The combat was fast paced and exciting, Hong Kong was stunning and diverse, the voice acting was top notch and the story did a very good job at keeping you enthralled.

That being said though, I do have a few issues with the game.

1) I felt the actual moves in your combat arsenal to be repetitive after a while. The combat scenarios were expertly layed out, but the combat moves needed some diversity.

2) While the story was brilliant, I felt it could have been delivered across a lot better and at certain times the story felt rushed. Shen just did not come across as a man conflicted about his loyalty even.

3) The game felt a little on the short side. If the story was elaborated on a bit more then it could have easily gained a much needed for hours extra.

Otherwise I really enjoyed the game! I'm seriously hoping for a 2nd installment :D!

Final Fantasy 13-2 - 9.5/10

This was my 2nd Final Fantasy game. I really enjoyed Final Fantasy 13, but I didn't particularly love it. FF13-2 on the other hand, it was the perfect RPG experience!

The voice acting was sublime, the graphics were gorgeous, the story was absolutely fantastic and it did a damn fine job of getting you to emotionally invest in the characters! The free-roam was also a welcome edition after the linearity of FF13. And a special mention has to go to the villain of this installment, he wasn't your cut and dry typical villain, his story and reasoning behind his action were very plausible and made sense. Brillianþ.

This game was just perfect, it has a killer campaign and the side-quests added some
diversity which was very nice.

That being said, I had two problems with the game.

1) The game was definitely too short. Compared to other RPG's and definitely previous Final Fantasy installment, it needed a good 10-15hrs extra.

2) The repetition of environments. Sadly a lot of the same maps were used over and over again (Not to the extent of DA2, thank God), it gave an unneeded monotonous tone to the game.

Otherwise, both fantastic games, with Final Fantasy being the best game I've played this year so far.

Alpha Protocol
I'm just gonna go ahead and rate this game 9 out of 10. I know a lot of people have a lot of problems with the game's dialogue and some of the mechanics and apparently there are a lot of bugs (that I still haven't noticed), but... Graphics still looks good for its age, lots of weapon and armor customisation with a story that changes or reveals something about certain characters with each playthrough, depending on your choices. Oh, and the ability to become the bad guy in the end. Loved this game. When in the mood to go and kick ass, this is the game.

Also,
Hitman Sniper Challenge - 10/10
Been playing this for probably over 6 hours, got all the challenges and all but the last two unlockables. I think I'm going to start playing Hitman 2 - 4 now in preparation for this game's full release.

Bought me the ultimate contract editon (includes all 4) busy with the 3rd one atm, I forgot how fun this actually is,

Dishonored - 9/10

Finished this last night and is definitely one of my favourite games this year. The only down point is the rather lack luster story, I feel the plot had alot of potential but nothing was done to build upon it. The brilliant game play & deep world makes up for this. I got the low chaos ending so next up is high chaos and a completely non-lethal playthrough. I do feel that the chaos system is too easily manipulated, once you unlock the shadow skill (which turns enemy into ash if killed without them being aware of you) you can pretty much kill as much as you like, though this doesn't remove the fun factor from the game. I especially enjoyed finding the most round about, unlikely way to my target.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

I finished this last night and I'll say that this game has been a stellar experience. The game continues where War for Cybertron left off, Cybertron is in ruins, and only one option remains while the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons rages on, Cybertron can longer be considered home. The game takes you through the last hours of that struggle, as the Autobots try to evacuate, while the Decepticons try to thwart their evacuation attempt.

"You're weak, Optimus. You run when you should fight!"
—Grimlock

Fall of Cybertron takes the great experience that War for Cybertron was, and blasts it into another world (literally:D). The narrative is rather compelling and is told in the same way WFC did it, from the perspective of both of the warring factions. The core difference is that instead of you selecting the character for that level, each chapter has its own designated character(s) assigned to it. This makes each level all the more personal. This may have taken a bit away from the replay value of the the levels, but it gives the story better focus. In fact, the last few chapters have you switching between characters and factions multiple times which also adds a larger scale to already focused story as it's executed to near perfection.

The graphics for this are just beautiful. The level design doesn't get repetitive, Cybertron is a marvel to behold in this game, and the bots are well designed. You would honestly feel like that world is alive (technically it is).

I can't find fault in the gameplay of this game. They definitely improved on WFC's control system as the KB+M (how I played for most of the game) is now a viable choice in how you choose to play (controller was the only way you could really play WFC without feeling murderous:rolleyes:). The game doesn't try to re-invent the wheel when it comes to how it plays as a 3rd person shooter, instead it uses the wheel in a polished and smooth fashion. There is a wide array of weapons which can be upgraded to make for an even stronger transformer. Each character has their own unique special abilities ranging from cloaking or using a grapple, to using a shock wave or even hovering. These abilities will have a cool down bar (the cool down is dependent on the character's ability), this forces the player to use them strategically and not just spam them.

Where FOC shines though, is in the transformations (it is a Transformers game after all). You can transform at will and it's seamless. Each transformation has its strategic advantages and disadvantages (the intricate level design will certainly force you to explore these), ranging from your faster yet weaker cars, bulky but stronger tanks or trucks, the choppers and jets, and of course Grimlock (an Autobot T-Rex Dino bot) and Bruticus (A large Decepticon brawler made up of 3 combaticons). You can't go wrong with a Dino Bot, that bot is tons of fun.

This game is by no means, a walk in the park, and you'll deal with a variety of enemies, who will try anything to tear you apart. These range from your standard bots to the Wall Crawler snipers, Guardians, or even Leapers. At times you might encounter more than one enemy type in the middle of a boss fight (pure anarchy, but the fun kind). They can overwhelm you with ease if you don't at least try your hand at strategy, especially in their various transformed states.

"After eons of conflict, I finally see the truth of your words, Megatron."
"And what might that be, Optimus?"
"This universe, no matter how vast, will never be big enough for you and I to coexist. "
—Optimus and Megatron

The multiplayer will have you playing for hours, because all the diversity from the singleplayer (transformations, weapons mods, and special abilities) translates well into the multiplayer side. You get 4 classes: Infiltrator, Destroyer, Titan, and Scientist. You can customize your transformer's look and load-out. There are 4 modes: Team Death Match, Conquest, Head Hunter, and Capture the flag. The only thing most likely to bring the multiplayer down is that other more popular MP games will most likely overshadow this game.

All in all, I would recommend this game to anyone, whether you're a seasoned fan of the Transformers universe, or just looking for a great action game.

Story - 8.5
Gameplay - 10 (Seriously, Grimlock and Bruticus:eek:)
Graphics - 9
Longevity - 8
Originality -8
Multiplayer -7.5

Overall - 8.5
