Razer responds to Naga mouse debacle

LOL, now you need to be online just to get your mouse to work. Next thing "PSU needs always online connection to give you more than 60V"

Why the fuck would a hardware peripheral device need to be online to access all its features? That's just retarded.

And yes, it's not really DRM, seeing as you can't exactly pirate a mouse, but it is possibly the most retarded thing since DRM.

Totally agree , which idiot came up with this and which other actually actioned it . WTF

I don't think it's because of piracy, I think it's rather a way to gather a LOT of use metrics (which buttons get clicked, customization options, how long the mouse lasts, error stats) from all their users, very, very cheaply.

I don't, for a second, believe that this is a "money saving" feature, and with flash memory this cheap, profiles are hilariously small to store on a mouse. RAZR just wants to mine crowd data :-p

Ya so true. I have 2 naga's and this crappy software make me just mad. Doesn't work half the time.

Why do you need a mouse with so many buttons, that just seems silly to me. Do you play games with one hand? Are 4/5 buttons on a regular mouse not enough?

i didnt buy them for the buttons. I like the shape. I only use 4 of the 12 buttons (back forward dpi profile up and dpi profile down and with windows 8 now the windows key ) if i can get wireless version with only back and forward on the side i would get that rather

That mouse was originally designed for MMOs like World of Warcraft, if you played games like that you'll know why you need 10 buttons. Unless of course, you are a "clicker" , you know, that person who runs around with 3 actionbars (10 skills per action bar) and click each ability with the mouse ...

Either way, personally, i never liked having all the buttons on my right hand on the mouse, since you can only access them with your thumb , i prefer a keypad on my left hand like the Logitech G13 or the Razer Nostromo which gives me the same "Features" but using both my hands. Then you have access to much more than 10 buttons.

Played WoW for many years and 5 fingers on your left hand beats 1 thumb on your right. Only people who want to play mmos on one hand would really use that mouse. :)

Well unless you have a gamepad for your left hand, playing an MMO on a laptop is not great. So i think alot of the mouse's popularity is for people who are more mobile and on something like a laptop where you don't have a full size keyboard or have alot of space.

I can only assume because they thought the people who bought this mouse were all playing World of Warcraft or similar (the mouse is called the "naga" for a reason, WoW players will know where this name comes from) , which implies you are 100% online all the time anyway.

So they either misjudged the target market of this particular mouse or people who never even had this mouse or even considered buying it, are throwing a hissy fit just because they don't like the idea.

Either way, i personally would prefer having on-device memory to store profiles in, because despite it's original intention being for online MMOs, chances are 99% that you will eventually start binding all your game's (offline games too) to those keys in some way, because you can. So now you sit on the airport with your laptop and have all kinds of issues to get your mouse's keybinds to work.

I agree with Monk here. I still play WoW from time to time (and mostly on my netbook) and I much prefer my action buttons on my keyboard. I would get frustrated if they all had to be mapped to my mouse.

I can see that some people might prefer having them on the mouse, but to me the keyboard is just better. Can't really see how a laptop keyboard is limited, though? Most of them don't have numpads, but they all have function keys and the numbers 1 through 0 on the keyboard, all within easy reach of your left hand.
