Real Time Strategy

So instead of derailing another thread. Lets start one dedicated to discussions about RTS games in all shapes and sizes.

RTS' in for me in general have allways been mainly a singleplayer affair. I've never been able to master them on even a marginaly competitive level for multiplayer. Just look at my stats in C&C KW: 13 wins (10 of which were because of DCs and the other 3 were because I had good teammate) and 256 loses. But I really enjoy RTS games because they can keep me busy for far longer than any other genre without growing boring before I get to finishing the game, and when it is done, it usualy leaves me well satesfide and than there is a mountain of skirmish to mine afterwards.

What about the rest of you?

Love rts games. But I have evolved to Total war games(Still going to play starcraft 2 of course)I just love the depth of the game. The scale of the battles are huge.

I just had a battle were I had about +-1000,while the the enemy had about 2500 or so. You just see piles of bodies during the war pile up. And the best thing is the units are so detailed and you must have tactics. The one match I had I only had about 400 troops(one set of cannons)And I was attacked by a huge army of +-1400 troops. And guess who won:D Oh the bodies of the dead during the battle never vanish.

Personally I do not much like them much, however I found that I learn them up fast, and then easily dominate even when going online. But it has been a while since I last played anything, maaaaybe Starcraft II will change that - maybe.

Best way I found to get decent online is to watch tons of quality replays and read a lot. Then emulate and adapt as you remember strats and counter-strats.

Love Rts games :D especially online play

single player is more of a pleasant bonus for me cause once you get relatively average at competitive play, single player becomes very 1 sided
I played cnc3kw for a bit but I stopped cause the patches changed the game way to much (I was playing nod back then and the redeemer got nerfed from 20 seconds of rage to 3-5sec... *I think)

Then I moved onto Red alert 3 and it just went uphill from there (It is actually quite fun once you get past it's graphical flaws)

Looking forward to sc2 :D

I love RTS too. I never really played any of them until the first CnC grabbed my attention when it just came out, from then I was hooked. WE regularly play Generals Zero hour here at the office, but I wish I could find someone to LAN / Online play Supreme commander with. Epic battles lasting hours ftw.

I enjoy RTS alot , just wish EA didnt butcher C&C the way they did.
Command & Conquer is dead to me now , no more building , no more resource gathering ,
just unit management

They changed the genre , and I hate them for it.

Same. Don't you have HOI3? Have you tried Arsenal of Democracy?

Yes that was fun but you never got to play the battles. I like Total war games as you have the turn based game were you build your armies do diplomacy and manage your cities and attack cities. Then you have the massive epic fights and they last for at least a half an hour a battle. It is a constant world with total war games.

For some reason I just can't get into turn based games. Weird.

Back in the day Close combat 4/5 was like that. You had a strategic screen for moving army groups and then a tactical real time aspect where you took control of the squads, platoons tanks etc.

You should try and give it ago. I mean you can just have real-time battles if thats all you want.

I think I played that one a bit. Did it have like pentagon grid that every thing move around on? I also did not like the turn based thing to much but i did give it a try.
