Recommend Me a Keyboard

Solitude

Mr. Nice Guy
I've got a shoulder problem and when I use a keyboard without a palm rest my shoulder gets crazy sore.

At work I have to use a new keyboard and the current one has no palm rest so I'm thinking of taking my old gaming keyboard from home and using that at work. Which means I need a new gaming keyboard at home.

So, recommendations? Is a mechanical keyboard worth it and why? Plus only recommend ones with palm rests please.

Keep in mind the noise of a mechanical keyboard when making your purchase. They tend to be a lot louder (or clickey) than standard keyboards.

I have a Razer Blackwidow Mechanical which i bought recently (a month ago). Doesn't have a palm rest or anything fancy.
BeoTeK is right about the noise. They are very loud compared to normal keyboards but I've actually gotten so used to it already.
I cant really comment if getting a mechanical one is better than normal. It is definitely different but i cant say better or worse...

Steelseries Apex. Beautiful, if somewhat big. With millions of colours available for backlighting the various regions of the keyboard, you'll struggle to fine something prettier. It's not mechanical, but I prefer it that way. They noise drives me insane and it would irritate the hell out of my wife.

I bought mine at RAGE this year and I absolutely love it. Could've gotten it a couple of bucks cheaper I suppose, but I don't regret it one bit. Oh, it also has a palmrest and double-sized spacebar. :)

There are lots of mechanical switches available as well, each suited for different things. The Cherry MX blue switches are my keyboards of choice, since they are best for typing.

Clicky is much louder

Can you give us a picture/image of the palm rest? Because not all palm rests are equal. A lot of keyboard have palm rests but perhaps you need/prefer a certain size of palm rest?

I have the Logitech G710+, it has a decent sized palm rest and I find it nice for typing, although the keys stand out a bit higher than my previous keyboard, so that took some getting used to. It has Brown switches, which are tactile (have feedback) but non-clicky, so while they aren't as loud as the Blue switches, they are louder than non mechanical keyboards.
For a "casual" gamer I might say there is little benefit of a mechanical keyboard over a non-mech, however I do like the tactile feedback.

I also miss the macro keys at work sometimes, as I can code a string of commands and then just spam the macro key.

Mind you, since I got this I haven't used my keyboard for anything gaming related. Only time I use the keyboard is to type. The G13 is magnificent. From RPG's to FPS, even the like of Elite: Dangerous and RTS game. It's a gem, so much so that I even have a spare brand new sitting in the cupboard.

Yep, that Logitech G13 awesome, i used that for years until it broke and now using the Razer OrbWeaver:

Pros and Cons to both, the OrbWeaver definitely got more options with the palm rest, feels a little more comfortable and is more compact (especially if you use it with a laptop). I also think the Razer software is better with the cloud saving and all.

The Logitech is dirt cheap though, i think it is R600 or so, OrbWeaver is like crazy expensive at R1.5k but got mechanical keys. There is the cheaper Razer Tartarus without the mechanical keys for about R800 or so.

Either way regardless of which one, i only use my keyboard to type text, for gaming i exclusively use the keypad. Especially once you get hooked to certain key-mappings, you can't go without it. On the G13 i mapped the WADS movement to the thumb-stick , which also meant less hand/wrist movement and now i can't go without it .

I do not have much experience with keybords that have wrist palm rests. But OOEEHHH when it come to mechanical...

I also thought mechanical keyboards are overrated when I still had my normal Rubber dome Keyboard. Till I got my CM Storm Quickfire TK.
it is very important to test the mechanical keyboards and see which switches suite you the best.
I have blue switches and I love them. They are very loud and make a clunk noise when you type.
Black switches are very very soft and sensitive, not my thing at all.

When getting a mechanical keyboard also make sure it is back lit and has a metal base. Hope you find the right 1!!

The palm rest in that image is the perfect size. I'd maybe prefer keys that are a bit flatter though. As for the mechanical keyboards thing it looks like I have to go try some out somewhere to see whether I like them or not.

This is my previous keyboard, the Logitech G110. It is non mechanical and it has "flatter" keys. Also a pretty great keyboard and it is cheaper than the G710+ (yes, I like Logitech). They palm rest is bigger on the G110 but it is still very comfortable.

That was my previous keyboard and I absolutely despised it. The keys are way too small and the keys always feel like you have to hammer them before they register.

After I got used to my G710 typing on the G110 (which my wife now uses) does feel "strange" and not as satisfying, but the keys are no smaller than on the G710. Definitely had to press the keys harder/further down for them to register than with the G710 but in my opinion it isn't that much more force required.

To each his own :)
