Replacing 2 GTX 580s with a single card?

Hi guys,

I've been holding out for quite a while now and I'm wondering if (with all these new AMD cards etc.) there isn't a single card that can replace my 2 GTX 580's? I game at 2560x1440 so the 1.5GB video memory isn't really helping a lot these days. But I also don't want to replace my 580s with a single card that is exactly on par with their current performance.

Except for the Nvidia Titan, is there humanely-priced single graphics card at the moment that completely trumps the 580s in SLI for performance that also has more than 1.5GB of video memory?

You can look into the GTX 780, R9 290 or R9 290x. The R9 290 is the cheapest among these cards, but it performs very well.

I myself am looking for an upgrade, I'd say wait a bit till the prices drop in South Africa for the nvidia GTX 7xx series cards, or just get an AMD card.

Aye, legends speak of such a device. To obtain it you must first prove that you are of a noble heart and generous spirit. This kind of power cannot be in the wrong hands. There is also a beast guarding it, and it is said that it's only weakness is that it cannot see those with a small head. Therefor your quest must first involve finding a Hobbit with a small enough head to slip by the fiend.

So what you're saying is that the cards are sold out?

Epic LOL. :p

Okay so basically there's no "single" card at the moment that makes it worth getting rid of my two GTX 580s then? Well, not without spending an insane amount of money at least.

Well the new 780ti will give it a run for your money, it is on par in certain games with th 690 if you have R9k lying around esp the superclocked or OC editions

2x 580's are actually slow to current gen top end cards.

I would recommend one of the following:

http://www.rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21&products_id=11301
http://www.rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=20&products_id=11274 (Price on this still needs to be confirmed)

Both of those will easily outperform 580 sli, while offering smoother game play and some new features.
It is quite hard to decide between the 2 though, seeing as the 780ti is slightly faster than the 290X but then the 290X will have Mantle support which is looking insane (Apparently 2x the performance in games that support mantle)

Sorry for the thread resurrection guys - but, thanks to The Joker - I'm officially replacing my GTX580 SLi setup with a single Gigabyte GTX 780 ti GHz Edition. I haven't been running in a single-card setup for the last 8 or so years, so it's going to be a new experience for me. I'll post some before and after benchmarks, hopefully by the end of tonight :)

The thing I'm looking forward to the most is running BF4 with ULTRA settings at 2560x1440. That's going to be proper eye candy.

Enjoy it bud, its a flipping fantastic card and also incredibly rare
Nice meeting you by the way :D

yegads!! you could have bought a PS4 + inFamous and still had plenty change left over :(

I contemplated a PS4 and decided the impending emigration to Canada nullified that as a viable choice. So I decided to upgrade my GFX card rather.

Nice meeting you by the way

Ditto dude!!! :)

Okay, so....this single 780 Ti card beats the snot out of my GTX580 SLi setup without even breaking a sweat. Benchmarks all round are a huge improvement. In Fire Strike it's nearly twice as fast as my old GTX580's in SLi. This is amazing performance from a single GPU card. I've never seen anything like it.

Some benchmark figures (without pictures, sorry)

3DMark Vantage

GTX580 SLi - 40500 GPU Score
GTX780 Ti - 46000 GPU Score

3DMark Fire Strike

GTX580 SLi - 7200
GTX780 Ti - 11500

Tomb Raider (2560x1440 with everything set to max)

GTX580 SLi - Average FPS: 48
GTX780 Ti - Avarge FPS: 60

Battlefield 4

Since this is the game I play the most, I specifically wanted something that handles the game well. With my GTX580 SLi setup I could game at 2560x1440, no AA, most settings at "high" except for texture resolution. I also couldn't enable any ambient occlusion.

With the GTX780 Ti, I am playing the game at 2560x1440, 2x AA, everything (literally) set the ULTRA and the game is playing rock solid with ZERO frameskipping even during busy team fights.

What an absolute BEAST of a card. And to top it off, the thing is as quiet as a church mouse under load. I'm truly blessed and happy to have this new toy.

Thanks again Joker!! :) :) :)
