The ASUS 2010 MSSA Free State LAN Championships were held on the 5th and 6th of June 2010.

The first day of competition saw GUITAR HERO, CALL OF DUTY 4, and WARCRAFT III being played.

GUITAR HERO

By now everyone should know that the GUITAR HERO competition at the ASUS sponsored MSSA provincial LAN championships are qualifying rounds for the WORLD CYBER GAMES (WCG). SAMSUNG is the sponsor of this part of the competition and has undertaken to bring up the top two players from each and every provincial championship to play in the Qualifying Finals to be held in Sandton on 7 August 2010. MEGAROM also sponsored the event through the loaning of equipment to ensure that the event was a success.

After a fiercely contested championship, the following players emerged as the medal earners:

GUITAR HERO 5 - Premier

1 Ryno Gildenhuys
2 Quintin Sweetman
3 Theo Strydom

COD 4

Even though the MSSA had received 18 entries, due to some last minute cancellations and the inability, no matter how hard everyone tried, to get some of the younger gamers machines ready, only 14 teams actually could take part.

What was really exciting was that there were learners from five different schools who participated in this event.

ESWAT’s main team dominated the event from start to finish, and even without having Frans Brewis to captain them, still managed to win all their games to not only win the event, but to also earn a re-award of provincial colours.

The results were:

CALL OF DUTY 4 - PREMIER

1 ESWAT
2 RRV
3 Prisoners with Girlfriends

CALL OF DUTY 4 - Under 24

1 L2P (Learn 2 Play)

CALL OF DUTY 4 - High School

1 POW
2 BTF
3 Sannies 1

WARCRAFT III

The WarCraft III section is growing in leaps and bounds. With every entrant aware that the MSSA will be sending a team of two players to the 2010 IeSF Grand Final in South Korea in September 2010, gamers are eager to qualify for trials in order to earn a place in the team.

The trip to the 2010 IeSF Grand Challenge has all accommodation and travel paid for.

Not unexpectedly the competition was fiercely contested by all the participants who knew exactly what they were playing for - a place in the National Team Trials, and a chance to earn Protea Colours!

Mornĕ Naude rose to the occasion. Mornĕ simply demolished all of his competition and thereby won the championship and earned himself Provincial Colours in the process.

The full results are:

WARCRAFT III: THE FROZEN THRONE - Premier

1 Morne Naude
2 Hendri Lombard
3 Andries Myburgh

WARCRAFT III: THE FROZEN THRONE - High Schools

1 Franco Knight
2 Christo Smith
2 Marko Botha

Gaming resumed on Sunday at 9H00.

The games that were played on the Sunday were COUNTERSTRIKE 1.6, DEFENSE OF THE ANCIENTS (DotA), and FIFA.

Again, the MSSA officials were pleasantly surprised by the number of learners that attended the event. Not only that, but gamers came from as far away as Kuruman, Kimberley and Pretoria to participate in the event.

COUNTERSTRIKE 1.6

The CounterStrike 1.6 event had five teams participate which meant that the event was played to a round-robin system in which each team, played against every other team.

The team “Eternal Conflict” immediately stamped their authority on the championship. However, “Prisoners with Girlfriends”, and what nice girlfriends, were not going to let “Eternal Conflict” have it all their own way.

When the two teams were drawn against each other, it was clear that this was going to be the match that would decide the Championship. “Eternal Conflict” proved to be just to strong, and thoroughly trounced the would-be challengers to ensure their position as the Free State Champions and to earn Provincial Colours by winning all their games.

The final results are:

COUNTERSTRIKE 1.6 - PREMIER

1 Eternal Conflict
2 Prisoners with Girlfriends
3 LOL

COUNTERSTRIKE 1.6 - High School

1 FAGS

DOTA

The tried and tested DotA was also played in Bloemfontein.

The team “GHOST” immediately took charge and dominated the event. Not since SK Gaming attended the 2008 African Continental Championships in Johannesburg (hosted by the MSSA) did anyone see such a display of skill.

“GHOST” were thus rightfully crowned as the Free State Champions and were also duly awarded Provincial Colours for having won all their games.

The final results are:

DEFENSE OF THE ANCIENTS (DotA) - PREMIER

1 GHOST
2 LOL
3 NOOBS R US

DEFENSE OF THE ANCIENTS (DotA) - High Schools

1 FAGS

FIFA 10

With a healthy entry for EA’s title FIFA 10, the Free State Championship was guaranteed of some firce competition. However, once the gamers discovered that their was a trip on the line to South Korea to the 2010 IeSF Grand Final, the knives were drawn. Every competitor gave it all that they could in order to win a spot in the National Team Trials.

The final results are:

FIFA 10 - Premier

1 Marius Lamprecht
2 Thembinkosi Lobe
3 Manesh Nankoo

FIFA 10 - Under 24

1 Clayton Moodley
2 Ashwin Nankoo
3 David Vieira

FIFA 10 - High Schools

1 Keaton Moodley

PROVINCIAL COLOURS

It is always satisfying to award provincial colours to deserving gamers. The colours are not awarded lightly and are awarded only when gamers meet the following criteria, and are always awarded on residency:

Win all of their games at a Provincial Championships, and/or
Finish in the top 20% of gamers at both a Provincial and National LAN Championships.

It therefore gives me great pleasure to announce that the following gamers have earned their Senior Provincial Colours at the Free State Championships:

Luvan Blignaut
Petrus Delport
Ryno Gidenhuys
Ivan Jacobs
Wayne Jacobs
Dewald Janse van Vuuren
Riaan Latsky
Morne Naude
Francois Nieuwoudt
Ruan Rautenbach
Coenie Rossouw
Jacobus Roux
Tyrell Shaw
Wayne Smith
Niel Spengler
Stephan Tait
Wayne Truter
Jandre van Vuuren

Of special note, it should be mentioned that Ryno Gidenhuys earned both his School Provincial Colours and his Senior Provincial Colours in the same event – well done Ryno!

Tyrrell Shaw too makes history to be the first gamer to earn his Senior Provincial Colours for the Northern Cape – a worthy achievement indeed!

Why is a team called "FAGS" allowed to participate? I mean, I'm sure a team called, say, "NIGGERS" wouldn't be allowed - and quite appropriately, at that. And how unsurprising that it's a DotA / Counter-Strike clan.

It's rubbish like this that keeps gaming in a state of retarded adolescence. How about promoting some intelligence instead of perpetuating puerile homophobia, huh?

@Azimuth

What have you got against cigarettes?

We both know this has nothing to do with smokes or bits of chopped wood. And I'm serious - why should any organisation allowing this be taken seriously? That homosexuality is so quickly, tediously, and predictably used as a pejorative in gaming is bad enough, why enable it by allowing a team with a - frankly - hateful name to participate in a provincial competition? As I've already said, I'm sure a team called "NIGGERS" would not be allowed, so why is "FAGS" permissable? It makes you guys look bad.

It really irks me that the word "fag" has become so abused in gaming. Stop and think about it for a moment - any sort of undesirable play or behaviour is invariably met with, basically, "negative" assertions about that player's sexual orientation, the subtext being that homosexuality is wrong. And as though a player's sexual orientation is even relevant. Sure, you can think whatever you like about gay people in private, but in public, this sort of casual bigotry simply has no place whatsoever. What about real gay gamers? It's an environment of such blatant hostility for them and for anyone who has gay friends or family, and it's dismaying that it's allowed to continue unchecked by authorities, including competition organisers.

Not the point dude
I fully agree, Tournament Organizers have the responsibility of ensuring that every aspect of such a tournament conforms to some basic rules.
Not only does it look bad to allow a team with an offensive name to participate, it looks even worse making an official tournament statement containing one.

"Derogatory language and slander involving race, gender, sexual preference, religion or creed, including negative use of otherwise harmless words is not tolerated. This policy is enforced across the board. "

I think that both Azimuth and Xerowing are being overly sensitive.

For a start Azimuth quite happily rattles off the "N" word, which for me as a black is offensive when used by a white. However, when the "N" word is used by a fellow black in context of the hip-hop culture, it is quite acceptable.

From what I am lead to believe is that the team are learners and that is the name chosen for themselves.

For five young boys to use that name, in a room full of other males many of whom I doubt they knew, I doubt that they were trying to be deregatory to anyone.

Think about it!

I didn't "quite happily rattle off" the word "niggers", I made a legitimate comparison. And you've still not answered my question - would a team of white kids called "niggers" be allowed? What about gamers bandying about the word "fags" being offensive to gay people? Did you think about that, or are you one of those guys who thinks it's okay because gays are cheap targets?

I'm not being overly sensitive. I'm suggesting that, as a competition organiser, you're allowing competitors to use hateful names. And frankly, your press release looks a disgrace with a name like that on it. I've seen the MSSA come under a lot of criticism recently, and this can only add to it.

This has nothing to do with being overly senstiive, in fact I skipped the last 29 years worth of Sensitivity training Camps in my area :)
This has to do with setting an example by not allowing what can be categorized as hate speech in your comps.
Context has nothing to do with it, neither does the setting in which it is used.

@ Azimuth

I do not think that you read my last post closely enough.

The "N" word is used with great acceptance by people who are black. All you have to do is listen to the music produced today. However, if a white person called himself a "Mlungu" it would not be seen as derogatory, but if a black person called a white person such it would be seen to be derogatory.

And so it is with many words.

And then there are words with many different meanings. There are at least three different meanings for the word in question.

So, instead of giving anyone the benefit of the doubt, you race off at a tangent.

I can not speak for the MSSA, but perhaps the name was chosen in all innocence.

And yes, a group of black gamers may very well call themselves "Niggas".

I am sorry but your argument is lax at best.

A group of black gamers would not be able to call themselves "Niggas" well not in a tournament hosted by competant organisers anyway. Just becuase it does not offend the "5" players in the clan, there are a number of black people who would be offended and it is for that reason, organisations like the MSSA should not allow the use of offensive or derogatory terms, regardless of the people using them.

Its just bad hosting in my opinion and as I have said before, the MSSA are just as much of a joke as your argument.

Edit: You can quote the person, instead of using @ User.

Quite on the contrary, I think it's you who is refusing to see what I'm saying - not least of all, because I KEEP ASKING, WOULD A TEAM OF WHITE KIDS BE ALLOWED TO CALL THEMSELVES "NIGGERS"? AND IF NOT, WHY IS IT OKAY FOR A BUNCH OF STRAIGHT KIDS - AND THEY MUST BE STRAIGHT, BECAUSE NO HIGH SCHOOL BOYS WOULD OUT THEMSELVES IN A COMPETITION, BECAUSE THEY'D GET THE SHIT KICKED OUT OF THEM - TO CALL THEIR CLAN "FAGS"?

Until you've answered those two questions, everything you say is irrelevant.

The word "fags" is simply unambiguously offensive as a clan name in a provincial competition. Stop pretending it isn't. I'm starting to go with the "MSSA are a joke" crowd.
