Rice tainted with arsenic a cancer risk: study

Rice tainted with high levels of arsenic has been linked to genetic damage that heightens the risk of cancer, a study published on Monday said.

Naturally-occurring arsenic in drinking water is a long-known health hazard, especially in Bangladesh, where tens of millions of people depend on wells drilled in the 1970s.

Scientists have also fretted about rice grown in contaminated groundwater, but this is the first time they have found proof of a risk.

 Hope this doesn't apply to us. Thank goodness I'm not a lover of rice.

On a more serious note, this is very concerning. It is both white and brown rice. US brown rice is especially high in arsenic according to studies.
Also rice has been found to contain high levels of lead as well. The most contaminated rice (lead contamination) comes from China and Taiwan. Rice from Italy (yes good old Italian rice), India and Thailand have also been found to have harmful levels.

You and me both.

I've never been a fan of rice--always just seen it as something people add to food to make you feel full faster.

Although, really... Arsenic in things we eat is bad? NO WAY.

And here I've always put lead and rat poison into my food for added flavour.

I never have rice unless work adds it to their food, but luckily they put it in a seperate pot most times and not a fan of it.

Relax - you'd need to eat a bucket of highly contaminated rice for any noticeable effects to kick in.

I'm surprised how many of you say they don't eat rice. I get bored eventually with wheat & potatoes...

Honestly, I don't buy rice. Ever. My parents-in-law gave us a rice-cooker. It's still in the cupboard and never been touched. I'll admit that I've been curious to try it out but we just never buy rice.

I tend to buy different kinds of bread (usually a normal loaf of brown fibre and then a freshly-baked savoury one) and regarding potatoes, well, I almost always bake them or mash them with veggies (green beans and onions with a bit of salt and pepper mashed potatoes =).

The only thing that really plays a major role in our diet is probably wheat. We probably only eat potatoes maybe four times a month at most.

I've never been compelled to buy rice... It's just so... so... boring.

I actually forgot I eat Rice Krispies for breakfast lol :D

Hopefully the toasting of the rice destroys it
