The stranger was in the bakkie (it's a double cab) and sabotaged the car for this very reason - so he could strangle the wife.
 
On the man's walk, he slipped and fell and accidentally ingested about a kilogram of magic mushrooms, and he only hallucinated the car scene.
 
Maybe he broke the window and either climbed in the broken window, or opened the door and locked it again when he got in.
 
His wife was actually a bigender person. At THAT moment in the dark field, she decided to shift into her male "form" just for the heck of it. She had been hiding this secret for many years. Finally, unable to live with the guilt, she took her life. Before she did this, she took a photo of herself in male form with the iPhone Flippie got for free when he upraded his DSTV account.
As she died, she put the phone on the seat with photo as the screensaver (Flippie took a while so it went over to standby). This was the stranger.
