Does this happen in SA or somewhere else?
If in SA then the woman and police man gets in the ferry, overloading is not an issue here.
The thief get either dragged behind the boat or elected to government.

The Policeman crosses on the ferry.
The ferry returns with the thief.
The woman crosses on the ferry.
The ferry returns empty.
The ferry crosses with the thief.

OK, I'm new to the thread so I apologize if this one has been used before. I did a half-hearted search but couldn't find it:

Two guys get into an argument at a construction site. The one is a big strong guy and the other is an old man and not nearly as strong.
The big guy points at a wheelbarrow and dares the old man: "I bet you R500 that whatever you put in that wheelbarrow and push for 100m, I will push it for 200m."
The old man thought for a while and won the bet.
