Ok, having spent the long weekend with this game, here is my opinion so far:
I wasn't really sure what to expect but I'm just going to put this out there: Drifting is a pain in the ass. In fact, cornering is a pain the ass.
In order to do a drift you need to press one button which turns your car on a central axis. Sounds easy enough, but unless you do it absolutely perfectly, you never know whether or not you're going to come out on the other side. Therefore, you never feel like you're in control of any race. It's needlessly frustrating, which is compounded by the fact that all the tracks are designed with drifting in mind. (On the other hand, get it right and it's pretty damn awesome)
There is not tutorial to explain this mechanic, so expect to come dead last in your first 20 races as you try and figure it out - because without it, there is no chance of keeping up with the other racers. Basically, if I'm screwing up, I want to know why and what I can do to fix it. The AI in the meantime, never a put a foot wrong.
I'm not sure how the devs thought this was going to be an inspiring way to start the campaign, and it's a pity because the cars generally handle perfectly well otherwise. As you progress, you'll unlock cars that don't have the drift dialed up to 11, but this doesn't really make much of a difference anyway.
Graphically, there isn't much to complain about - it's good looking enough and it performs well - but the slow mo crashes are really not on par with those you'd find in Criterion games. I also like the race information displayed on the environment.
The music is nightmarish dubstep trip into Hell. If the controls don't drive you insane, the music will.
Split/Second (as OTT as it is) managed a totally decent soundtrack of original music, so inserting a bunch of grade F techno tunes and hoping it will suffice is just lazy.
The destruction aspect is limited to about five key targets per race, and these get do get boring after a while. They do however let you vent a little during a race as you struggle to gain 11th place. Amazingly, you can drive through pillars, walls, trucks, other cars and buildings - but lose control of your vehicle around a corner at about 80km/h and you'll burst into flames if so much as touch a wall.
Depending on your level of patience, you'll either find merit in it's madness, or like me (even though I did manage a number of podium finishes) you'll soon realize that the game is much more frustrating than it is fun - which is to be expected considering every race feels like a gamble.
