RIFT : Planes of Telara

Thats the great thing about Cleric, you don't have to be shoehorned into any specific role, you can play what you like, be it Healer, Tank or DPS. For soloing I'm enjoying the hell out of Shaman/Druid/Purifier. For groups, especially instanced raids I switch to healer, which is a role I love when playing when in a group, but I could just as easily go tank if I was so inclined.

This diversity inside classes is what I love most about Rift so far.

If a class has a heal button, more often than not you will be forced to focus on healing while grouping.

In the past I have tried to play "hybrid" classes in MMOs, and always, always, I was forced to focus on healing when grouping. DPS are dime a dozen, and most will argue, "Well like we cant heal, so like, since you can, you should and not dps". It sucks, but it is the truth. Only way to get around it is a solid guild.

Oh btw, I have not quit. I am just busy with other things which need my attention. Got like 6 months game time, so I will be back as soon as I can. Also waiting to see how the class changes pan out. Another thing, playing a rogue has been okay-ish, but honestly, I have yet to find a soul that really fits me.

Shadowfox, why don't you just buy a second role, and spec full healer in it? You can switch to and fro then as you like. If you need money for a role, give me a tell in-game (I suspect you're on the same as server as us).

I have actually purchased a second role already ;) I'm busy playing around with it to see what I can set up in terms of healing. Druid already has some nice skills that help with group healing I've noticed - and it keeps me alive as well when I fight. My survivability is quite awesome.

Like I said - it's not so much the skills/setup that's the problem - my problem is more along the lines of keeping the rest of the group alive, which is why I hate being a group healer. And also why groups who don't believe me when I tell them that tend to find out I wasn't lying a little later on :D

I know from experience being a tank is a major pain if your cleric isn't on the ball.

Good point, the expectation will be that you do the healing, that is the main focus of the Cleric after all. For me it's not an issue though, since I prefer to heal when in raids (not so much when clearing Rifts). I just like not being stuck in that role when soloing or doing quests with others. It's nice to have options and as a healer you can easily get into a group. :)

As someone who runs rifts a lot and also groups as a healer for instances I can offer a little bit of advice to you Shadowfox: Run as a DPS role in a rift setup but don't take any points in your third soul. You can then swap out that third soul to either Sentinel (has a great single target heal on an 8 second CD) or a Warden (has a great HOT for 0 points). DPS away and pop a heal every now and then on someone in the rift group. Trust me, NO ONE expects clerics to actually play healers in rifts. Those that do can score quite nicely in their contribution but it is not NEEDED! There is enough spot heals, self heals and raid heals flying around with mage chloro and rogue bards. Clerics have excellent rift DPS.

Rifts are usually done through brute DPS due to numbers. Only if you are in a very small group of 2-4 or so should you consider changing to more healing or tanking. Again, no one expects you to. This is the beauty of the rift mindset that people have developed. Anything goes, someone will always have a heal available. There is really no pigeonholing at all.

Instance runs are a totally different kettle of fish but even here, people swap out builds on the fly depending on the situation and you can find a cleric tank, rogue tank, mage healer, cleric DPS pop out as needed. Most that I have played with have fully embraced the flexibility of the rift class system, making instance runs quite interactive and chatty. But yes, in instances the cleric is the healer. I have run many instances where 4 of the 5 group members were clerics.

Buying a role can be expensive, but it is worth it, plus you will take a LONG time to get bored with the game if you experiment with all the souls available to your class to see how they work. Make a tank role and play with tanking, change to your DPS and try something different and go for all druid or all shaman, swap to a caster DPS role and see how the nuke class mechanics work differently between the Inquisitor and Cabalist.

Personally I swap out roles when soloing rifts. DPS until the elite boss final stage of a minor rift, and then tank that till its done.

35.9mb patching right now, not too big at least.

For just these two:

GENERAL
* The Codex: Changed the collision in the Codex Warfront map to be more symmetrical.
* Artificers can now open their crafting window by right-clicking on a Loom.

It's actually quite large... Not a complaint, just an observation. :)

Hey Guys,

Are there any SA players on bloodiron pvp?
And if so is there a guild?
Because the low lvl guilds suck ass.
They dont give a shit if your getting ganked broken.Dont help at all.
Ive got a lvl 24 Warrior nic Satarial

I have run many instances where 4 of the 5 group members were clerics.

I ran an instance once with 3 clerics and me being warrior-based tank. We got wiped twice cause I don't think any one of them where dedicated to being the healer. Did not even get an answer when I asked who is supposed to be my healer. But yeah,, pretty cool having these options. As a warrior I can either DPS (using my champ) or go tank (mix of pally and reaver but still refining this one and trying out the different defensive souls).

Can someone please briefly explain to me what this 1.1 patch is about? What levels it's for, and how long the event is going to last? Only lvl 39 eish, don't want to miss out.

The event lasts for a week I hear. It basically is a world wide invasion of death rifts in every zone. Each zone will have an invasion event, something like we have now that when x invasions have been fought and x rifts closed in the zone a invasion boss will pop, which everyone takes down. I assume the goody drops will happen from these invasions. If all the invasions are closed then periodically the main raid will pop which again I assume will be level 50s only. However, the invasions in every zone allows all levels to participate. In addition to that there are a ton of class balances (nerfs and buffs) as well as a lot of new drops added to dungeon instances. I expect this patch to be pretty big, it all depends how they structure their technology, will know by tonight ;).

I am actually not planning to play tonight, big patch night in any MMO is a nightmare and this one is happening smack in our prime time, expected to finish at 9pm our time.

It's for all levels, it's going to be a weeklong event where special rifts are going to open up (I think there's a new dungeon as well).

There are going to be a bunch of unique drops that will only be available during this event, Including a Spectral Horse :D. There are also going to be a lot of balance and UI fixes coming in this patch.

I believe the event is going to start today, so I'm hoping they release the patch soon so I can DL it while I'm at work.

Based on the size of the rest of their patches - I'm expecting this one to be a nightmare. Upsized.

I'm down to my last 500MB for the month - so depending on the size I might only be back next month.

Yeah, I'm expecting it to be quite large. If you want I can let you use my 1GB of Afrihost bandwidth. :)

If it comes to that, I'll give you a shout, and the offer is much appreciated :) I killed my Afrihost account on the initial patch after installation :(

Well still no patch (except for the downloader update), so if this patch is as large as I suspect it's going to be (I bet near or over a gig), then playing tonight will be out of the question. :(
