ROCCAT Kone XTD Review (My thoughts)

The Joker

Thread Killer MKII
Hey guys.

So I recently got my hands on the Roccat Kone XTD and I wanted to share my thoughts about it.
1st let me share some of the specs and what this mouse is all about.

So after using this bad boy for roughly a month I can honestly say its the best mouse I have ever had the pleasure of owning. The mouse has insane customization options, starting with the DPI settings, Ranging from 200 to 8200 DPI with 41 steps from one end of the range to the other. The mouse also comes with 20G of weights that you can add to the already 90G mouse, although quite a few mice has the feature, the Roccat feels perfectly weighted, but then again that is personal preference.

I also noticed while working on my desktop and then switching to gaming it was a smooth transition as the performance is partially attributed to the superior self-calibrating tracking distance and control unit. Small things like being able to set the max and min lifting distance sets the mouse apart and makes it the perfect gaming and working mouse.
This also mean switching to and from different surfaces makes no difference to the mouse, you simply put it down and play.

I tested the mouse mainly playing Dota 2 and COD Blops II, I setup different profiles for each game and then discovered a really amazing feature. The mouse will auto select the profile for the game you are launching, meaning you don't have to go back into the software once its setup, making it fantastic for jumping from game to game and to different applications.

The software...lol It can be a little overwhelming at 1st and a little complex but after spending nearly a month with it, its now second nature to me and I have setup everything perfectly. The customizing and settings are endless with the mouse and I found myself spending 30min just setting it to the right led color I wanted :D

Build quality on the unit is exceptional, It feels well made and like a lot of thought was put into it, and I would hope so, as the mouse retails for roughly R1200. For that money you do get the best mouse on the market today, nothing comes close to this as a package and as a mouse. Its simply unbeatable.

Beautiful..Isn't it..

Over all I would score the mouse as a 9/10.
The only issue I see with it, is the price being a little on the steep side and the fact that its right hand only.

Thanx to Rune and the team from www.rebeltech.co.za for sponsoring the mouse.

It is a really clean looking mouse hey, however for that price... its a no from me even if it is the best.

Thanks for the time doing the review Mr Joker.

Thanx guys :D

@Baker boy, Neah this mouse is really in a different league. If your coming up for Rage your more than welcome to come try it out at my place :D

@Blind Faith, I know exactly what you are talking about and I am glad to say that issue has been sorted.
It feels very different to the Kone + even though it is technically the same mouse, it was heavily upgraded though.

Beautiful piece of kit, but a bit too rich for me. Also a bit overkill (for my needs, at least) on the specs.

Pretty impressive, but having only upgraded to a deathadder recently from my 2003 MS mouse, I can't really say it would be a priority upgrade for me.

Still, I can appreciate it for what it is and I'm glad it exists.

It is indeed an amazing mouse,i bought it after the right click on my R.A.T7 broke.

No problems what so ever,if i had to say the only downsides are that setting takes a while to apply and hangs your whole system while it's applying them,colours/colors aren't 100% the same as the preview in the control panel and macro's are overly complex to set up.

Overall they aren't major downsides.
I just wish it had macro's that can interact with mouse movement since it does have on board memory, maybe a hack in the future could allow it.

I got mine for R900 though.

Pretty weird, I didn't have any hangs when applying stuff. Could be that it had a conflict with a driver on your machine.
You got it for a damn good price bud.

Indeed,i haven't uninstalled my old drivers yet.

They might also be outdated, haven't updated my drivers since i bought it 2-3months ago.

I did have a conflict with the driver on my Steel series apex keyboard, but I did a clean install and all was well.

I've got the Roccat Pyro, and I've been looking at the Kone for an upgrade. An extra plus would be that my Isku keyboard can the communicate with the Kone, so I can use the kb to switch DPI or profile, for instance. It does seem like the ideal upgrade, but the price tag is stopping me for the forseeable future. :(

Well like I said the price is slightly high but if you consider a Razer Ouroboros is more then R400 than the Kone XTD and having used both the Kone feels like the better mouse, I do like the wireless connectivity of the razer but the premium you pay for it doesn't justify it for me.
