Rockstar likes keeping magical secrets

I have to completely agree with this attitude. I love it when something comes up in a game that takes you by surprise.
Sometimes it feels that if I don't want the majority of the game to be spoiled I need to avoid any info about it till I have it in my hands. It is difficult but worth it in the end.

In hindsight wish I hand not seen as much of Uncharted 3 as I had.

This is one of the biggest reasons that I avoid reading into games I'm excited about too much. I like that feeling of, "Woooow! That was so unexpected!"

The moment you know what to expect, you immediately begin searching for flaws. It's why some games which give you no unreasonable expectations remain memorable and fully enjoyed while others get simply ruined by hype.

There are, of course, games I'm happy to read up on to see if some of the things lacking or unsatisfactory in previous instalments have been addressed but that's where it stops. I don't want to know about the story, of the characters we might come across, of events to be expected. I don't want to know. That ruins much of the experience for me.

However, it's naturally difficult for a reviewer and journalist to accurately portray the experience without giving anything remarkable away. Many people WANT to know. I just don't :)

Knowing about a games fancy graphics is fine, but being told in a review about a special game mechanic or plot point ruins some of the joy of the game.
