Hi guys, I am looking for advice again. What I want to do is connect my pc to my wifes pc, just for info sharing and some home lan gaming. What all would I need any advice on where I could get whatI could need for cheap would rock, from what I understand is that I would need some kind of router and some cables I imagine, again focus in on cheap cause its just for some fun at home

Thanks again for all the help everyone

Well depending on what router you're currently using, I would suggest making sure that your router assigns dynamic IP addresses to each machine that way you won't have to put in the IP's yourself. :) so when you are on the router just look for something that says DHCP and if it does then enable it. :)

Oh and Best cheapy router, I'd say to go for a Netgear router and yeh get yourself X3 3m Network cables the 3rd being a spare in case one breaks or you have someone join you for a gaming session, it's always good to be prepared for these kinds of things. ;)

Ok thanks, I dont have any router at the moment, + - how mcuh would a router and cables set me back, i dont need anythign fancy for adsl or anything like that

Why are you telling him he needs a router, you can connect pc to pc using only a network cable, just plug the cable into both pc's assign ip's and your ready to go.

I'm thinking along the lines of additional people etc... and FYI I didn't say he needs anything, I just said that if you're looking for a router then I gave my suggestions.

Ok so would it be possible for us to share info over a straight connection as well as lan together? I will be getting a router but untill I got some cash I think this might be a temporery choise. would we connect via usb cable or would i jsut ask for network cable sorry the questions are stupid

Alternate Option is to buy a small 5 port Switch, you can pick one up from about R150 depending on the brand you buy.
Using a Straight Connection (or Switch for that matter) will require that you set up proper IPs on both machines but it will work, with a router the benefit is that you can use DHCP and makes the network setup alot easier....

Ok I spoke to the guys over at PC international, what he said is I can do a straight cable connection using a crossover cable but they dont sell them, alternitivelty he sell a thing called a switch you can connect up 8 pc and that cost R199 and then he said I will need some flyover cable @ R40 for 3 meter so I would need 2, so total would be R280.00 thats not too bad

Are u running windows 7..? Because if u have wifi u can run homegroup and then u can share things like documents, pics, etc. u can also enable sharing on other folders...

I am running window 7, but I would also like to LAN games with her

When I get some cash would some thing like this work well

Dude, I'm pretty sure you can use the router you're using at home now to connect the two PCs? Unless it's one of those modems that only have one ethernet port?

I dont have any router at the moment I dont have anythign not even a crossover cable :(

Then just buy a long network cable. the cable cant be longer than 50 Metres .

Then pop it in .

now the one thing you need to remember that if you have 2 x 1Gbs network cards 1 for each pc you can connect any network cable as the cards do the switch for you.. IF you have a 100 speed network card you need a cross over.

Again then buying 2 x PCI 10/100/1000 network cards and cable would be the best option as it gives you 10 times the speed.

You dont need a 5port switch .

You + your wife = 2

network cable has 2 ends

Do the maths .

PS: setting Ips are easy ..

Then do you have windows 7 on both PCs as you will strugle to see data on a windows 7 pc from a XP pc.

All I hearing is read reading is moeny money money and problems I really think I will battle with the whole setup and IP thing, I think with a hug it will be easier so I must just.

Does anyone haev asecond hand unit they would like to sell?
