Router

Then just buy a long network cable. the cable cant be longer than 50 Metres .

Then pop it in .

now the one thing you need to remember that if you have 2 x 1Gbs network cards 1 for each pc you can connect any network cable as the cards do the switch for you.. IF you have a 100 speed network card you need a cross over.

Again then buying 2 x PCI 10/100/1000 network cards and cable would be the best option as it gives you 10 times the speed.

You dont need a 5port switch .

You + your wife = 2

network cable has 2 ends

Do the maths .

PS: setting Ips are easy ..

Then do you have windows 7 on both PCs as you will strugle to see data on a windows 7 pc from a XP pc.

Um dude, don't mean to be a doos, but the cable can be up to a 100m long. If you don't believe me, click here.

Anyhow :D, you won't really get a 2 port switch. The smallest I've seen is usually 4 port. Also, modern routers and switches auto-negotiate duplex and speed settings as well as auto detecting the cable pair setup, so don't worry about the cable type. Just buy two CAT5 lan cables and that's it.

If you have any trouble setting it up, just PM me and I'll contact you.

Don't stress about it dude, it's really easy.

dude it will cost you R30 for a cable. And if you are really strugling and in the centurion area ill come help you do it aswell.

Step 1

determine what OS and network cards you have

Step 2

IF windows 7 and 2 x 1Gbs network cards, Buy any network cable and plug it in

Step 3

Set up Ip range, this is really easy.

step 4 ..

Your done

ive seen packet loss at 60M so 50 M then booster . RL experience and can be confirmed by plenty.

2ndly .. HE wants to connect 2 pcs so he can stick the cables directly into the pcs IF they have 10/100/1000 network cards, Why I suggested buy 2 x 10/100/1000 network cards instead of a switch is that to share on a 10/100/1000 network will be allot more efficient than a 10/100 one

Ps: You need to take into contention the variables of heat and wear and tear on the cable. in a lab everything is perfect, ;)

Honestly, I think we're over thinking this for Sickboy.

All he needs is:
1 x 3m cable, each end into each PC (dont stress about cross-over or straight, unless the PC is SUPER old)

The PC's, if they can play games, will most probably have built in 100mbps network built in, so its a win there. And that is fine!

Then go and set your IP addresses, set one PC to 192.168.0.30, and the other to 192.168.0.29. Done! It doesn't necessarily need to be 29 and 30, pretty much anything to 255.

If you need help setting up IP addresses just tune us.

Seriously... a network cable is around R7/m terminated.... connect the one end into your one pc and the other end into the laptop.... set the ip (maybe 3/4 clicks)... profit????

Or get a wireless card for your PC... set an adhoc network... profit a little slower????

Both these options are cheaper than a router/hub. All these options will allow 3G sharing.

Just get a crossover cable then, for in-case.

Ok first stupid question for the day.

So if I use a router to connect the 2 PC's and I connnect my 3G stick, am I correct in thinking that if both PC's use the internet at the same time it would use up double the amount of " internet time " in other words it will chow up the 3gig I have double as fast.

Sorry I know its a lame question

Thanks

Ok, so let's say, hypothetically, you're 3G stick has a 4mb bandwidth capacity.

This means that's the maximum capacity of your internet connection is 4mb. If you have 2 PCs, they will both be able to use 2mb. If you had 4 PCs, they would all be able to use 1mb. So you can never use more than 4mb throughput at any given time.

Both your PCs will also not always be using the internet at once, so it really depends on what you're doing. You are however still sharing the bandwidth between 2 people now, instead of one so you will use more data.

So that's the difference between throughput and bandwidth. Throughput is the amount of data that can be transmitted and received at any give time, while bandwidth is the amount used over a given time. If that makes sense :D

Perfect thanks that make 100% sence, So if we both using the net it will use more data.

Thanks buddy

Think of it this way. If you're sitting alone at your PC downloading stuff, it will download at full speed. For yourself. But if you're wife/gf joins in, it will halve the speed, but it will still be using the max capacity. By saying you're going to use more, I mean that there's now two people that use the internet instead of one.

Just keep an eye on your usage every month, you will see what I mean.

Yeh, data usage is by how many sites you visit, how many videos you watch and for how long, how many files you download and how big, etc and not really the time you spend doing it.

Don't forget some of those windows updates.
Sheez, yeah, formatted my system over the weekend, and the updates just kept on coming. But I must admit I went from straight XP to XP SP3 and then some. Still pretty crazy.
Thank goodness for uncapped.
