Rugby World Cup 2015

It looks better than the previous team but I would replace JP with Mvovo, de Villiers with Kriel and Matfield with de Jager.

Ja, whytf they decided to drop Lood after he was the only real light in our Japan tunnel is beyond me. Agree completely with your replacements.

De Villiers and Matfield should not even be at the World Cup. Huge mistake to pick them in the squad. Great players but way past their best

I'd totally have taken them. They'd have made excellent additions to the coaching staff.

Cape Town - Jean de Villiers' place in the Springbok Rugby World Cup squad was a topic of debate months before Heyneke Meyer announced his 31-man squad to battle at the 2015 showpiece.

Would his knee heal in time? If it did, would he have enough game time under the belt to warrant selection? Would he still be good enough?

A jaw injury in De Villiers' build-up to the World Cup threw another spanner into the works, and when he was named Bok captain for the tournament there were perhaps more questions than answers.

Those questions reached their peak after the Boks' shocking loss to Japan, and there were renewed calls for Meyer to back the Damian de Allende/Jesse Kriel partnership in midfield.

But Meyer has kept faith in De Villiers one more time - picking him in the starting line-up for Saturday's crucial clash against Samoa while De Allende comes into the side and Kriel drops to the bench.

"It’s one of the most difficult decisions in my life to make. You’re almost in a lose-lose situation because if you don’t pick your captain and you lose they’ll say you should have picked your captain," Meyer said.

"I had a long chat with Jean and he just wants to serve South Africa. He said it doesn’t matter, if he’s not in the team that’s fine, he’ll come from the bench or whatever it takes."

Meyer said the character that De Villiers had shown throughout his career - since his debut against France in 2002 in which he tore his knee ligaments - had also been a deciding factor in backing his captain.

"I just decided that if you go into a fight that you have to win … that your whole career and the whole country depends on … that I really want to take a guy that’s had six knee operations, that had a knee operation and a knee injury in his first game for South Africa," Meyer said.

"People said he would never play again. He came back and played 100 games.

"Just before the World Cup we had an 80% win record with him as captain. He got injured again. Even the specialist said he won’t play again and he came back, proved them all wrong and then broke his jaw. And again people said he won’t be here and he’s here.

"I’d rather go with a guy like that into a fight that we have to win because I know he wants to play for South Africa."

Whether or not Meyer's decision is the right one remains to be seen. That will only be answered after the tournament, at which point it will be easy to look back and point fingers.

For now, though, the coach is certain that he has made the right call.

"If we as South Africans maybe back each other more, South Africa will be a much better place with maybe less hate and less violence and more love," he said.

"So I’m going to go with my captain. I’ve got total confidence in him. The team backs him."

Hats off to Jean de Villiers for coming back from injury but in my opinion that is not a good enough reason to be picked ahead of other players. He is clearly off form. The will to win is not the same as having the ability to win. I think it's a huge fallacy of Meyer to pick someone just because they have overcome injury and want to be in the team.

De Allende and Kriel showed that they play exceptionally well together. And funnily enough in both instances where we had our record losses against Argentina and Japan we had de Villiers in the midfield. I'm so disappointed that Meyer doesn't see this.

I believe we will destroy Samoa on Saturday by 20 points or more but I do not believe that we will win the World Cup.

Comfortable 28-13 win for Aus over Fiji and France leading Romania 17-6 at the break

The Assies didn't get the bonus point though which is surprising. Even more surprising is how Romania is defending against France! However I'm going to bed now. :)

MUCH better by the boks! Well done boys! Still think they tend to go from left to right to left to right without much of a plan. And when I see Kriel or Habana drift sideways and only end up in touch from the centre of the field I get bummed.

What I learned from this game:

- Beast really wants to score a try, but got skip-passed at least twice when he arguably had the better run into the goal area.
- Lambie is shorter than Le Roux! Never would have guessed.
- Am I the only who noticed Oom Victor dyed his beard? Not a grey hair in sight! :wtf:

Lol, first thing I noticed during the anthem was Victors non grey beard.

Why couldn't we play like this against Japan?

I really feel Lambie made a big difference in those last 10 mins. Pollard wouldn't make those passes that lead to tries.

Agreed that it was much better by the Boks, but still not sure that they have what it takes to get past the 1st playoff match. Sounds like Jean broke his jaw again and might be heading home.

I feel sorry for Jean but I can't help but feel that it's a blessing in disguise. The poor guy, he has such bad luck with world cups.

Definitely a blessing in disguise for the team, Damian de Allende showed yesterday that he should start at 12, and even though Jean was a great player he shouldn't have gone to the World Cup and should now retire after this setback

Yep and it has been confirmed. Poor Jean de Villiers is out. You really have to feel for the guy. And Serfontein has been called up to the squad.
