I don't think the fact that there are guns is the problem, I just think the game needs to be balanced. At the moment the entire game is skewed in favor of large groups of established players. It's almost impossible for new players to establish themselves because they're just going to keep getting wiped out by established players.
The problem is that every time a new player dies he has to start from scratch, but when an established player dies he can just pop over to his house and get everything he needs again. Group play for new players is difficult in a world where established players just shoot everything that moves, but solo play is basically impossible. I've never even built anything past a wooden shelter simply because I die long before I reach that point.
