SA getting black ops servers (no joke)

Basically what this means is that MWEB customers will be able to play CoD: Black Ops but NO other online games seeing as their latency has gone to heck as a result of the Peering decision that they've made. For everyone else, you can play all of your games, except CoD: Black Ops.

MWEB does have peering agreements with other ISP's, including IS. At this point, only users on the Vodacom, MTN and Telkom networks will experience lag on the MWEB servers.

This is from the mweb article on myG, not everyone will be affected.

I'm not worried about MTN, nor VodaCom - but dude TELKOM. That means anyone with a SAIX account - which in turn means most WebAfrica subscribers.....read a bit deeper into this mate.

Super stoked about the servers. This game has been on my watchlist for a long time.

But would definitely like to know how this peering translates...

Although I do commend MWEB bigtime (lets face it, they've changed SA Internets for the better), the peering issue could mean "if you don't have an MWEB account, enjoy 400ms playing Black Ops."

Finally I can kick some ass. I have pre-ordered my game today at BTgames for R439 including free delivery so can't wait

Epic...but what if the game sucks ;)

Well if you've played MW2 then you'll know what to expect, tryarch have taken the same engine and just tweaked it a bit, added some new exciting game modes, added cinema mode, removed compound killstreaks and probably added a few other goodies that we'll see when the game gets released. Whether or not the game will suck will be based on your personal opinion of the COD franchise.

So after the news weve been all waiting for. Can we all please stop being all polite and emo and talk about how awesome this game looks and how utterly shit MoH is.

Our clan will be pre-ordering 2 servers (public and pvt) tomorrow. Usually only my girlfriend who can get me this excited.

To anyone with an MTN/Telkom/Vodacom account. Buy Axxess vouchers. They work on the IS backbone. It's really not that difficult.

Black Ops uses a heavily modified World at War engine by the way.

Or get an MWEB account and support the guys that landed us the biggest game of the year?

At the risk of sounding completely facetious, why don't MyG and MyBB just change to MWeb for hosting? Whether it be a contract, a special relationship due to other circumstances that trump gaming, or sheer bullheadedness - sometimes it's just not that easy. Also, we could help them as much by getting people to complain to their ISPs about the peering issue and help in MWeb's goal of a freer and more open "local internet".

So here's an idea. On your side (MyG), why don't you bring us a stickyed thread containing the following...

1. ISPs that peer with MWeb
2. MWeb's best offerings in terms of "everyhting but uncapped" for those who can't afford it at this stage
3. Inventive alternative offerings... ie: Axxess R99 prepaid uncapped surf package. I'm not sure how much data other games take up but I do know that LoL/DotA don't take up much more than about 40-50 megs an hour so that (possibly) wouldn't trigger the download throttling of that particular account. This needs to be tested and given to us in a nice, easy to read format.

I reckon between MyG and MyBB you guys could do a pretty good job on something like that, so get creative and get writing!

I have no control over who we host with, unfortunately. However, moving from Hetzner to MWEB would be a massive ordeal. It would literally involve moving physical hardware, and would result in hours of downtime for both sites - at best. This in turn would negatively affect our Google rankings, not to mention the plethora of potential technical problems that typically come with moving a site as big as MyBroadband as well as MyGaming. Just moving to a new cluster with the same hosts a few months back has caused too many issues to mention.

It is a heck of a lot more complicated that a user simply changing ISP, trust me :)

Also, complaining to your ISP is not going to cut it. I have spoken to people involved. The peering charges literally run into the millions - even if 5000 gamers complain, they will never justify the financial loss that the likes of MTN, Vodacom and Telkom would take if they dropped peering costs. If the other ISP's do cave, it will probably be because they now have to pay for international traffic to access sites hosted with MWEB, not because us gamers complained. Remember, cash is king, and we are talking huge numbers here.

I don't mind if you personally don't want to sign up for an MWEB account, honestly. I just find it odd that in response to the massive amount of time and money they have invested in getting this game here, you would publicly suggest that people sign up with other ISP's, when MWEB have some really great bandwidth packages, and using their service will most probably give you the best possible experience on the Black Ops servers.

First they made uncapped internet an affordable reality in SA. Then, to drive bandwidth costs down further, they took a stand against the ridiculous local peering fees when no other ISP would do the same. Now, they have invested massive time, energy and money into bringing us Black Ops servers. At this point, even the skeptical should be convinced that MWEB is on the right track. This makes me want to support them, and I would think other gamers would feel the same. If not, then why should they even both trying to win over gamers?

As for future articles - this story only broke on Friday, and of course we will be looking into the various angles in detail over the coming weeks. Thanks for the suggestions though, will definitely take them into serious account!

Okey dokey. Nice long post that was surprisingly not tedious to read on this crappy netbook screen. You have a talent mate. :)

1. I did put a disclaimer that I was being facetious. I fully realise the process in moving hosts for a large website is a hectic chore and I really didn't intend that comment to be taken in any serious light whatsoever. However... It illustrated my point that not everyone can just switch ISPs at the drop of a hat. While they wouldn't need to go through all the bother you would, if would be a huge inconvenience nonetheless. I was offering another option for people who were in this predicament. Also, not everyone can afford uncapped (which is weird, coz it really is dirt cheap imo) and I really don't know what other option MWeb has for connectivity.

2. I have an MWeb uncapped account. 4megabit. It rocks mkay. :p

3. Sure gamers should support them, but after arguing fruitlessly over this topic, I've given up. I gave people the easy option, the option of prepaid bandwidth that they could use so that they needn't change the status quo in their lives. Local ping on MWeb uncapped has always been great (for a number of games and a number of my friends who have MWeb uncapped - whether it be CoD/DotA/something else). However, I'm not going to automatically assume that everyone has the same level of brilliant service I have simply because this is SA and I'm very lucky (live close to an exchange that has had no copper theft problem of note in the last 5-6 years that I was here). This brings me to my next point....

4. A lot of people are muppets. They will blame bad ping on MWeb instead of looking at their line/router/game config. No matter how impassioned a plea to support MWeb you make to these people, they will not listen so why bother? You can't please everyone and you shouldn't need to.

5. Complaining to ISPs won't work? Maybe not, gamers are a small segment after all. However... gamers are a bloody vocal bunch and if we make enough noise, the average joe consumer might think twice about signing up with one of those providers if the "latency will affect their internet experience" even if they have no idea what latency is. It's up to us to wage war against the established order.

It seems that iburst is peering with MWeb, ping to igame is good (sub 40) and a tracert reveals its hops straight from mweb to iburst at JINX. So... good stuff.

Just like MW2 I've followed the wait and see approach when it came to BlackOps and it seems that the issues sorted themselves out in the end. But there's a few things I'd like clarity on.

Firsly, is MWEB going to be the only ISP that's going to "rent" servers through GameServers? Aren't Saix and the rest allowed to "rent"?

Secondly, I have Vodacom as my ISP and won't be able to switch (long story), if MWEB are the only guys renting servers am I screwed?

Thirdly, there is no thirdly........... ever.

Fourthly, if Mappy were to pew pew me in the face with an AK.......... does that mean the Yogi Bear movie will be good?
