SA tax season for 2013 opened

You can also work it out yourself using the pocket guide. You'll need to use your total annual income according to your IRP5 for the calculations. Unless you have a car allowance, I don't think people usually get back a lot. With a travel allowance though, you can claim all the tax back on that if you've travelled enough and kept a logbook.

Ok Can you maybe point me in the right direction as to what I have to use? Cos its very confusing and Im completely lost.

See that is why I was wondering since I am way below their amount to submit, plus I only have medical aid to claim... But if its anything above R500 I will do it, simply since that will pay for at least one text book
it should be. I used to get about R600ish back when I could still claim my medical aid

There are probably calculators online for this, but here is how to calculate it manually.

Take you annual salary and apply the formula as per the first table in that document.
Thus, if it is less than R160k: Annual Income * 0.18
If if is between R160k and R250k: ((Annual Income - R160k) * 0.25) + R28800
etc.

Then take the amount above and subtract the rebate (R11440)
This will now be your Total Tax.

Then, subtract your medical expenses (incl medical aid contributions) with the following formula:
Actual Tax Payable = Total Tax - (Total Medical Expenses - (Annual Income * 0.075))

Then simply look at your IRP5 and see your Tax Credits, deduct the Actual Tax Payable from that and you have the amount that you would get back.
