As expected, Samsung has taken the wraps off of its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5. Announced today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Samsung Galaxy S5 builds upon last year's Galaxy S4 with improved camera capabilities, a new design, a fingerprint scanner, fitness tracking capabilities, and more.

The Galaxy S5 deviates from the plain plastic look of the previous iteration with a new perforated pattern on its back and comes in new "shimmery white, electric blue, and copper gold" color variants. The changes to the design also offers new device protection, including a a dust and water resistant coating and a built-in fingerprint scanner built into the home button for added data security. The screen size has been increased slightly to a 5.1" FHD Super AMOLED 1080p display.

The built-in camera sensor has been increased to 16-megapixels — up from the Galaxy S4's 13-megapixel sensor — and boasts the "world's fastest autofocus" of 0.3 seconds. It also comes equipped with faster HDR performance and added depth of field effects.

Under the hood, Samsung has added support for the latest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ac, as well as 2X2 MIMO and expanded LTE support. A Galaxy S5-specific feature called Download Booster leverages both Wi-Fi and LTE to increase transfer speeds. It uses an unspecified 2.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GBs of RAM, and ships with Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The device will be sold in both 16GB and 32GB variants, though storage can be expanded to 128GB via microSD. The battery has been increased from a 2600mAh in the Galaxy S4 to a 2800mAh battery in the Galaxy S5 with an estimated talk time of up to 21 hours.

Finally, Samsung is ramping up its fitness tracking efforts with S Health 3.0 — the company's integrated fitness software. Users can track steps taken, record food intake, and even track their heartrate with a built in heartrate monitor. Samsung has designed a touch-enabled heartrate monitor onto to the back of the Galaxy S5.

The Galaxy S5 along with Samsung's new Gear Fit wearable will be available in the U.S. on April 11.

it comes with a finger print scanner integrated into the home button just like an iPhone, there's a gold variant just like an iphone and the CPU is rumoured to be 64 bit just like an iPhone. the 64 bit CPU part is inevitable its a technological factor but why copy apple's other ideas, and this phone just seems like another incremental increase just like the s4 wasn't such a big increase from the s3, same applies to all iphone's that came after the 4s

WOW! A S5 who would have guessed? It does everything a S3/4 does only it's more expensive.

On a serious note, Samsung should stop pumping out phones with increased ppi density and rather work on things like water resistance, better life, drop/crack resistance glass and general stuff that is more useful than a 4k display and 25 MP camera. So Glad I am not a sucker that has to have one in my hand - If whatsapp did not exist I would still use my Nokia 2330 for SMSing and Mxit.

It is now getting beyond the point of madness to expect a us to pay Thousands upon thousands for essentially a S3.5 :(

Well I don't mind the new phone, hopefully the S4 should get cheaper and I can finally upgrade this useless blackberry.

But seriously I don't get the negativity. It's a phone, there is only so much you can do unless you are expecting lasers or something. Then sure it is copying features that the iphone had but it's only catching up in the gimmick areas like a finger print reader and that's why this phone was released, to keep tabs on a fickle market who say the new iphone is here, where's the s5.

Is it a great update on the S4, not really but it's now got everything the 5s has which keeps the market in America happy when comparing phones. If you want someone to blame then blame the consumerism in America that loves to place more value on a newer iphone model name than what it brings to the table and value. The world is unfortunately run by America and their unending wallets, the S5 is pretty much a victim of that.

As expected it's extremely Meh we need another cellphone manufacturer to push the market again that's what we need this stupid stalemate apple and Samsung have... Right now I feel like changing to Sony or HTC just out of principle

Big upgrade from my current S3.

The main reason why I would get this phone on my upgrade is because of the ultra power saving feature, which will come in handy everyday!

I disagree, a few years back HTC revolutionised cellular phones then these amazing phones came out in terms if the iPhone 3/4 but they didn't stay head of the game long because Samsung changed up the whole market with the s3 once again now the 2 are just trying so hard to compete with each other like I said now we need another manufacturer to push the boundary

Sony and LG but they seem kinda behind

Agreed in that sense, a product line doesn't bring innovation, instead it's new products from a different manufacturer.

So basically I can hang on to my S3 for another year.

That S3 is such a solid phone bro... Its been up there with the best of the lot, and its a good 3 years on now...

I wasnt aware the S5 battery wasnt removable... this does change things for me as well... Unless they have done something spectacular to the battery life...

It is removable, from what I have seen. It's just the Z2 which isn't, that is in fact a better phone.

Still fugly! I just don't understand the appeal.

Nothing in life is about the looks, it's all about the insides.. what something is capable of

Underwhelmed with this. I have to say that if it wasn't for the guys making the Yotaphone, I would say that the innovation factor of the mobile phone market is pretty stagnant.

(Not that I'm saying the Yotaphone is going to be great, just saying that they are innovative)
