Samsung UHD vs LED

My dad is looking at getting a new TV. he saw a 50" UHD for about 13k and a 55" LED for around 12k (from Makro). I don't think there is any benefit to getting the UHD and i think he should rather get the 55" LED.

what do you guys reckon ?

If he is just using it for TV or movies UHD is pointless

I agree. DVDs don't even do normal HD (1080p) justice. As nice as it is to be an early adopter for the bragging rights, it is not yet worth the money.

If your dad is anything like mine, who cannot tell the difference between SD and HD, then UHD is just a waste. Rather get the biggest FHD tv in his price range and he will enjoy the "big screen rugby", just like my dad! :)

BTW, I am sure my dad is stronger than your dad! :D

For 1k difference I'd go with the UHD. Sure, there isn't much UHD content yet, but in many years from now there definitely will be and then at least he wouldn't need to upgrade again (that's assuming he cares at all about quality).

UHD is the future, its not just a gimmick like 3D and curved tv's.
So if your dad buys a UHD Tv now he won't have to "upgrade" in the near future.

Other than the fact that there is no such thing as a 144Hz, g-synch compatible UHD 99.99% Adobe RGB panel yet.

The only reason for UHD is for games or other *content*. No, get the 1080p, and get a 'proper' UHD in 5 years time.

You mention a "proper UHD" in 5 years time, yet there are already proper UHD tv's and monitors available.

I got to play with the new LG 31MU97 (True cinema HD 4096x2160) and it was spectacular. I've also done a few UHD tv installs and they were all amazing.

And why mention G-Sync? This is a thread about Tv's not over priced pc monitors.

I recently got the 48" LED Samsung, and it blows my mind... From my 5 year old 32" Samsung LCD it is like day and night... If the difference in the LED and the UHD is as drastic then I would say go for the UHD, but again, I think for your Pops the Size is going to make more of a difference than the LED/UHD... My Dad wouldnt be able to tell the difference...
