A school bus was stolen on Thursday morning from the premises of a school in Bayswater, Bloemfontein, the SABC reported.
A tracking system on the bus led police to Rocklands, about 16km away.
According to the SABC, police saw the bus being driven with its lights off in the evening.
They stopped the bus and a shoot-out ensued between the police and the three occupants of the bus.
