Setting Up Netgear DG834G for PES2010 [PS3]

Hi,

I have Afrihost and use my Netgear DG834G for work on my laptop and gaming on my PS3. The connection I am running is wireless, although I have noticed that connecting it via cable enables a much more consistent gaming environment.

Everything connects ok and I can play online (albeit mostly have button lag issues). I've heard recently that there are ways to setup the modem/router in order to get the a better gaming experience.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to set up the modem for gaming on a ps3? Some optimum settings would be nice to minimize the lag.

Thanks in advance.

You can make sure your MTU is set on your router at whatever your ISP is pushing it. That's about it, really. :P

I should think so, yes.

Oh, also - as you've already suggested, wired over wireless for gaming connections. Even in a small home network, you can lose packets.

I use a DG834G router.

No extra setup should be necessary to get consistent low latencies (50ms +-). I have my MTU set to 1492, which is the standard for a PPPoE connection, Afrihost may differ but its unlikely.

As Azi rightly pointed out, stick to a wired connection when playing games. The packet loss inherent in wireless networks may result in a "spiky" connection.

Yeah. I only mentioned it because I'm an iBurst subscriber, and iBurst's MTU is set to 1392. I'm not sure of the technicalities, but I'm assuming it's just some esoteric difference between DSL and wireless signals. Still, it's possible some DSL ISPs do use a different MTU, for whatever reason. I really have no idea. :P
