Hi,

I was speaking to some people and this came up, I have always considered this, but never followed through with it..

Is there anyone here that has taken up an instrument, and how it's affected you, changed you, etc

Convince me :D

Thanks :D

Yes. Do it. It's not easy though. You need a spare few years. And constant practice and playing.

Can't really say how it changed my life, but it's an awesome feeling to be able to play your favourite tunes. Unless you like the wub wub shit

I always thought it'd be cool to play metal :D

But that hasn't convinced me enough to take it up

Your name is Talentloos. And you're speaking about a talent. "whistling:

I'm not worried about time, I'm 17 I have all my life to learn it :D

It really depends on you and the resources you have. I taught myself from scratch, so it took me about 10 years to get to a point where I was satisfied. If you can get to some lessons, it would make your life a whole lot easier.

And I don't know about these days, but 10 years ago, a guitar pretty much sorted you out in high school. If you know what I mean...

It was a guitar teacher, and friend who pretty much planted the idea to learn, I've known him for a while, but never really thought about learning..

I'm finished high school at the end of the year, so it's a bit late for that :P..

Agree with BradBear here... you have to force yourself to learn to play..

Perhaps you pick up a guitar and you're a natural though? It's worth trying.

It takes time and I mean time. I taught myself and was playing close to ten hours a day.
Also its a constant learning process you will never master the instrument only a very few have.

Good luck. :D

Definitely give it a try man, the only regret you will have is that you didnt start sooner.

It is tough in the beginning, it feels like your never going to be able to get it right, but you have to persist through that initial hard part, and once you learn some chords and can put them together it really opens up

This was my Axe! So bummed I sold it but was hard up for cash at the time.

The oke I sold it to, dropped it a week later and cracked the body. Mad me mal.

But to answer your question, yes! I believe everyone should learn some sort of musical instrument. Definitely worth the trouble, not just to say you can, but for the self pleasure. But it's a LONG road (kinda like Dark Souls).

I would suggest you start with an acoustic as the strings are fatter, if you can learn that you can play anything.

If you want to create music or pour your emotions into something and create something, then definitely do it.

At the end of this month, I'll have been playing drums for 7 years. I took lessons to learn the basics for 1 year and after that I taught myself.

I'm most avid about playing metal but I do enjoy playing jazz and funk as well. What you will need is patience. If you feel yourself getting annoyed for not being able to learn something, take a break and learn something else. You'll find that when you come back to where you were struggling, you'll find it easier to learn.

To ease the learning, I'd recommend getting Rocksmith 2014. Great and fun way to learn to play guitar as it incorporates mini games into it which build muscle memory and teach you basic music notation. It's all about patience, dedication and passion.

If you have the passion to learn the instrument, you will. Regardless of how difficult it may seem at first, the smallest breakthrough in your playing will mean the world to you.

10/10 would recommend learning guitar

FYI, here's my after my self-taught metal drumming:

Thanks for all the comments..

I have spoken to my parents about it, and we're going to see if we can afford it, and I'll start if so :D
