Should Mass Effect 4 be a sequel or a prequel? BioWare's asking.

Before the original trilogy, please. Less chance of messing it up that way.

Also, please make it an RPG more like the first game, instead of a cover-based shooter with dialogue options.

This just seems like they are looking for an out, because making a sequel will require some skilled writing to pull off and make sense.

This. I kind of want a sequel, but it seems way too ambitious to pull off, based on where the original trilogy left us.

Probably the unpopular choice, but I'd say neither. Start fresh as if the current games never happened.

They've screwed up the ME universe too much for a sequel (that opinion might change after playing the two SP DLC packs... I've heard that it sheds some light on the way forward for a sequel).
I suppose a prequel might be interesting, but I'd rather have something new with no idea of what to expect.

On other elements, go back to ME1 origins. I still feel that ME1 was better than any of the other two games. Especially when it comes to things like weapons and customisation which in ME3 is pretty lame. We had different brands that we can buy from different stores and different customisation options and an actual inventory. Weapon customisation in ME1 had tangible effects whereas in ME3, I can hardly notice the difference... probably due to the multiplayer in order to make the game balanced or something.

All I take from these surveys is that they have no idea what they are doing and just want to cash in on another game.

Wow, if it's a prequel, it'll be a turn-based role-playing game with a storyline and depth that rivals Planescape Torment. Massive critical acclaim will be heaped on it and it will be played by a devout few for the next 100 years. The same devout few (approximately 100) will be the only people who bought the game.

If it's a sequel, Shepherd will be teleported into the Gears of War sequel: the singleplayer storyline will be truncated into a 5 minute tutorial and you won't be able to play it offline. On launch day it will get more money than the three biggest national economies of the world, causing a new dark age soon afterward: three nuclear reactors will blow up just because everybody's playing it on launch week.

Hey, I'm just extrapolating. Remember, Bioware said that they had a vision of the Mass Effect series back when they made the first game. Does not look likely, if they want to crowdsource the whole design piecemeal. If you look at the artbook, the guys didn't really have a good idea about the ending until very late in the project, no wonder it came across half-baked.
