ShowMax is coming to DStv and South African gaming consoles

But what is your take on the service vs. Netflix, the only series i really would have wished to be on netflix is GoT (I believe it is on showmax though)

If it comes to the XBox One then I'm considering cancelling my DSTV subscription. I only had it for the sport and with our sport being so crappy, well it seems like the way to go.

I recently got details of my parents DSTV online, so now I can stream sport as well. I'm going to cancel DSTV and just get more internetz for all the streaming. Hopefully Showmax comes to Xbox One shortly, then I'll get that. Plus I have Netflix. Show all in all entertainment will be sorted, and I would officially have cut the cord, so to speak

Do you have the Netflix with the South African content or the US content? Also, are you happy with it?

I have the South African Netflix only. Currently I haven't even watched a 100th of the content on it, so I am more than happy with it. Once the Showmax app is available on Xbox, I'll get that as well, and cancel my DSTV, because I can stream sport using my parents account. The thing about my requirements is that I'm not really watching any particular series right now. In fact, I haven't followed a series in a very long time, so what Netflix SA and Showmax has to offer more than caters for my needs of entertainment. The same cannot be said for everyone though, as I know many people needs to have access to the latest series as they release for some reason. My viewing habits have changed considerably, and I consume more Youtube content than any other platform. The only compromise I have is that I need to have sport as I cannot live without my sport. The rest I am not bothered with at all.

Thanks. I'm considering dropping sport completely. I love rugby but the political interference is spoiling everything for me. There are some shows that I watch new on DSTV like Game of Thrones and Gotham but I mean I can always watch them later. There are so many shows that I haven't watched that I know are worth watching. And my wifey watches a lot of older shows these days in any case.

Rugby takes up a lot of my time so if I drop it then I'll have more time to game and so forth. And it's not just watching rugby either. I watch too many games, bet on the games, read up about them, comment at sites, play and organise fantasy leagues. Hmmm I will think about it.

I hear what you are saying with regards to the sport. Its really easy for a fan to get disgruntled with the current performances of the national teams of not just rugby, nut almost all sport. I can almost guarantee you that it would be very difficult for you to cut out the sport completely though. But in the end, this is your own choice. I for one haven't given up hope yet, and I will continue being a supporter and try to stay positive despite overwhelming negativity from around the country. I understand it perfectly, but I'm not at the give up phase yet.

Go have a look at what is on offer for both Netflix and Showmax. If you already have a decent internet connection, the money you save by not having DSTV will more than cover both platforms, and via Showmax you will have access to a bunch of South African created content. I believe soapies like 7de Laan and Binnelanders is actually one day behind on Showmax versus on DSTV, which is good if you are into those programs. I also know that Showmax has Game Of Thrones and is very up to date on it, as well as Gotham. So yeah, going with both Showmax and Netflix will give you access to way more series and movies that you will ever have time to watch, at your own pace.

It's a tough one. The thing is that we are currently struggling at all levels of rugby. And it grinds my gears to see what is becoming of our sport. I find myself annoyed by the situation more than what I'm loving it. I'm going to Saturday's game and I can't see us losing at Ellis Park so at least there's that. But yes, maybe you are right and I'm just disgruntled by the previous weekend. I'll think about it though. Dropping dstv and rugby has the advantage of freeing up both time and money.

It's also not something that I thought of recently. I actually told my coworker in the beginning of the year that I'll wait and see what happens with Super Rugby. So I don't know. Sorry, I'm just thinking as I write this.

I've been saving up to go to the World Cup in Japan. I mean that would be great but the way things are going. I don't know.

Sigh.

Stupid government. Maybe I'll feel better about it all after this weekend.

So I now have a 90 Day ShowMax viewing period which is pretty awesome. Except I can't watch it on my tv at all!

I don't have a smart tv and it would appear that ShowMax doesn't work on the XBox One. It doesn't have an app and even worse it doesn't support the Edge browser. I haven't actually tried it in Edge yet, just going on what I can find on the interwebs.

It should be really quick for them to write an XBox One app. I can't see why they haven't got one yet. Or why they can't make it run in Edge but can on other browsers.

It's pure silliness.

So Solitude's Expert Advice of Awesomeness is that Netflix is superior purely because I can actually watch it on my tv.

What? That we will be seeing ShowMax on the console one day in the future?

I wants it now! Now I tell ye!

Depends, do you enjoy sarcasm? or are you just hopeful of using the app one day on you console like myself?

I'll stick with Netflix for the time being, kthnksbye.

I'm wondering if ShowMax will let me go work on an XBox One app for them this weekend.

I guess the reason I stick with NetFlix is for one: I am not fond of monopolies and try to support the 'other' guy. ShowMax is part of Multichoice. Already ripping people off when it comes to DSTV.

Two: Not sure if ShowMax does support this now, but I can lower my streaming quality in Netflix which is a huge money saver and I do not need to watch everything in 1080p.

Three: If need be - NetFlix does stream with surround sound: Under correction but I do not think ShowMax does.

Four: Netflix is available on every single device I own. Even my Fire TV stick.

The content is not bad on ShowMax and if you seriously want to watch Afrikaans content - I guess it will need to be ShowMax - but truthfully (imho) - I still have to see an Afrikaans program that is worth watching. (No offence meant to anyone - I am Afrikaans myself and I am sure my wife will disagree)

I have both Netflix and Showmax but have been using showmax more the past few weeks. Local Netflix content is seriously lacking compared to when I had access to US content. Showmax just needs to support Firefox and we also need those console apps fast. I also don't like that showmax doesn't have subtitles, but at least I can watch Vetkoekpaleis again. [emoji14]

I haven't tried ShowMax yet (Multichoice FTL) and Netflix killed Getflix last week, so I'm sailing the 7 seas now. ZA Netflix sucks all kind of balls you get, except for Kimmy Schmidt. Until the ZA library is expanded upon, I'll continue enjoying what KAT offers me. I won't cancel my Netflix sub yet, for the odd times I just want background noise on the telly.

The Showmax guys work at a decent rate with their app support - it only took about 6 months since the first request for Chromecast support for them to update the app with it, and it works quite well.
