Skyrim Size.

Why is this game so small 5.5 odd gig's?

That is impressively small by today's standards.

Oblivion is 5.57 gigs & presumably Skyrim texture sizes are much bigger.

I suspect its caused by heavy reusing of the same objects. If cleverly done then nobody notices. e.g. Instead of having 5x tree models you have 20x branch models and build the trees on the fly with a random algo.

Impressive though...

Not very high resolution textures. Character creation way more advanced then it was back then. Lots and lots of trees and reused obects. Properly compressed audio?

I would guess it's due to the lack of high res textures to accommodate the 7yr old consoles. Pity though, they should really have bumped things up on PC.

Either way, impressed with it so far. As long as it it will keep a fair amount of play hours, which I don't really doubt.

Okay the games textures aren't that awesome, but don't despair.

Someone, actually a few people are working on High Rez texture packs. The one guy is busy with Whiterun atm and says you need 8Gb of RAM to have it work correctly and that is at 4096x4096 also available in 2048x2048.

That's 4 - 8 times the detail of the normal textures in Skyrim which are at 512x512.

Also as soon as the modding kit is released we'll have some epic mods for an epic game.

All in all my estimation of time I will take to finish the game and the side quests: FOREVER x infinity - so much fun.

Yah, they game looks beautiful if you ask me. I think Bethesda created the game to cater to all PC system specs. I mean it's sposed to be more about the game expereince than super ultra high res textures. But the Scrolls games are soooo heavily modded these days that I know theres already a lot of content being created. Bethesda will probably release it's own high res pack soonish.

I don't mind the textures actually. The overall look is absolutely stunning and like Cobalt said it just runs very well for all that beauty. The size of the game is really surprising considering the scope of it.

The game is epic and super fun.

The quest chains are cool, I finished the Thieves Guild quests and holy crap its epic and long. Currently busy with the Mages Guild quests, then I'll be off to become a vampire or a werewolf, both if I can...

Total playing time = 35 hours, level 20, 2.5 days.

jeepers dude, don't you ever sleep.
anyways let me know if you can become both, aren't the vampires and werewolves supposed to be against each other, don't know if that lore holds true with skyrim though

Hang on wasnt there someone who said yesterday this game is pushing the envolope of gaming today?
LOL heard some jock in PC Zone telling the assistant how he heard Skyrim was going to be a resource monster, luckily they make graphics cards boxes big enough to hide my silent laughter :D
