Small project build..Help me pick a cpu

Hey guys

I plan on doing a project build this December and as I have already spent a fortune on pc parts xD I'll be going with 2nd hand parts for this build.

What I wanna know what would be the best option :D

Project 1:

i7 920 @ 4Ghz
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
Apogee GT Blazer Series Memory Modules--DDR3 2000 6GB (3X2GB)
2x 5870 in Crossfire

Project 2:
Xeon E5540 @ 4Ghz
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
Apogee GT Blazer Series Memory Modules--DDR3 2000 6GB (3X2GB)
2x 5870 in Crossfire

This will be fitted to a customized chassis with some other bits and bobs.

Hmmm, it's decent anyway, what's the 'project' for ??

For myself and for the online shop.
I want something unique and different for the front page of the website, which by the way will be including you're rig once I get the go ahead on that :D

:D AWSOME , when are you starting with the store ?. Just a random question but, don't sandy bridge CPUs only support 1333mhz ram ?

Well hopefully it will be up and running by march next year.
As for the question, this project is based on socket 1366 not Sandy bridge mate :)
As for the next part, although sandy bridge runs default 1333 Mhz, you can still overclock the ram to run at higher speeds.

As I said, it was random, not talking about this build :/ lol, hope it's up soon and all the best mate, might I ask, Y U NO SLEEP ? Lol

I am on holiday :D Finally :D
So busy stuffing around with one of my rigs at the moment, but I am heading to bed now lol

Hey Joker, I presume you have used this website. Can't find those cpu's that you mentioned as I am still very sleepy.
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

Yeah i do use that, although I don't care much for what it says :D
In this case its just a pick of one or the other. They are both pretty much the same, except the xeon has more Cache and its a server cpu so tends to be ultra stable and can take a lot more strain and heat.

Well then I presume your mind is made up unless the price difference is big. As far as I know the Xeons are pricey even 2nd hand?

Well I can get both for R1000, im just not sure if I want a server cpu.
I might end up getting it though, I plan on really clocking it, wanna see what a older setup can do in BF3.

Xeon will overclock better (likely) on lower voltage compared to the I7.....in the real world performances are very close how ever on paper the i7 is the right choice and #1 gaming processor.

Project has changed slightly :D

AMD Phenom II x6 1100T
Gigabyte 890FX UD7
Coolermaster Gemini II

Just unsure about the ram.
