Why do more PS4 games run in 1080p than Xbox One? Sniper Elite dev explains

Part of the reason why more games output in 1080p on PS4 is because the Xbox One's eSRAM is "just a little bit too small," Sniper Elite 3 dev says.

Why do more PlayStation 4 games run in 1080p compared to the Xbox One? Sniper Elite 3 developer Rebellion Games senior producer Jean-Baptiste Bolcato told GamingBolt that part of the issue comes down to the Xbox One's eSRAM.

"I think eSRAM is easy to use. The only problem is…Part of the problem is that it’s just a little bit too small to output 1080p within that size," he said. "It's such a small size within there that we can't do everything in 1080p with that little buffer of super-fast RAM."

"It means you have to do it in chunks or using tricks, tiling it and so on. It's a bit like the reverse of the PS3. PS3 was harder to program for than the Xbox 360. Now it seems like everything has reversed but it doesn't mean it’s far less powerful--it’s just a pain in the ass to start with. We are on fine ground now but the first few months were hell."

This is why, Bolcato said, you see more games running in 1080p on PS4 compared to Xbox One, a fact that has drawn debate and controversy for months now. Rebellion Games is targeting 1080p/60fps for both the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Sniper Elite 3.

Bolcato said he's sure the development process for Xbox One will get easier over time and it's already improved since Rebellion began work on the platform, he said.

"We were worried six months ago and we are not anymore," he said. "It’s got better and they are quite comparable machines. The Xbox One is a bit more multimedia, a bit more hub-centric so its a bit more complex. There’s stuff you can and can't do because it’s a sort of multimedia hub. PS4 doesn’t have that. PS4 is just a games machine."

This is why, according to Bolcato, the PS4--at least on paper--is "a bit more powerful," he said. "But I think the Xbox One is going to catch up."

Sony has previously said the reason why PS4 games sport better visual performance is because the console is the system developers want. Meanwhile, Microsoft has said that "these little things get way overblown" about the 1080p/60fps debate.

This is why I'm currently holding back on the new gen of consoles. I find the appeal of a MC Console (X1) more rewarding than a pure gaming Console (PS4) and until they've unlocked the potential I'll stick to PC.

I cant disagree with this statement more, Xb1 will not close no gap It's better for you to stick to the pc unless you love Kinnect.

To me, games just look so much better in at least 1080p with 60fps. So I don't think things got overblown, gamers expect quality, and I don't think 1080p is something that a new console shouldn't be able to achieve.

Agreed, however microsoft can't say their NSA friendly xbox is a fail so instead they try to convince that papa microsoft knows best and gamers don't know what they are talking about.

That's a bold statement to make so early on. Have you spent time with a X1?

Mate be careful. he knows everything and your not allowed to share your opinion...This isn't a forum..oh wait...

I still want to get my hands on a X1 before I decide which console I'll be buying, this time around I won't be buying both because of the retarded price. I also find the lack of games annoying at the moment.

You say that but the PS4 doesn't run all its games at 60fps, it might hit a high of 60 but its not a constant avg, more like 44fps on avg depending on the game. Unfortunately you would need a monster setup to maintain 60 fps in "Next gen titles" Which is why I think the consoles are a bit of a joke.

I agree everything looks better running on your screens native resolution so if you have a 1080p screen you want your games to run at that resolution.I think framerate will be variable if you want rock solid 60 fps you will need a high end gaming pc for that.

Yeah, I didn't explain myself too well. I know that consoles would struggle with some games to output 60fps, and I'm okay with playing a game at 30fps. It's the resolution that is important to me. I don't want to be sitting in front of my 40" TV and have to deal with a pixelated version of a game or a picture that doesn't full the whole screen if I want to maintain quality. Unfortunately with digital TVs, up scaling a video really reduce the quality, it's a big reason I seldom watch DVDs anymore.

But yeah, I asking for 60fps is a bit much, but 30fps at 1080p is the minimum "maximum" I am okay with. :)

Same, hence my statement. MS is pulling some weird moves and the consoles haven't even been out for 6 months - there's a lot that can happen.

No doubt you're biased towards PC [as am I :p]. This is the exact reason why I believe that if you truly want 60fps then you rather use that money to beef up your PC.
