Not a glitch afaik....

A horizontal form of rocket jumping appears in Doom (1993), where it is used to reach the secret exit in E3M6 (it is possible to reach the exit without rocket jumping, but this technique was the intended method according to John Romero).[SUP][6][/SUP]

Hmmm. On Reddit a while back there was an early 90's article where they spoke to Mr Romero and Carmack where they explained that they never intended rocket jumping to begin with, it was actually discovered by accident. It was a glitch in one of the earlier engine builds, and from there it led to implementation.

"not intending it" vs glitch. Gamers often utilize game mechanisms in a manner that the devs hadn't anticipated, but in my books thats not a glitch. Its a pretty fuzzy line though.
