The amount of money Sony spent on the RND for the PS3 was significant and it would be, especially with the global economy where it is, bad business sense to fork out more $$$ on RND for its next incarnation when there is still plenty of life left in the old black monolith.

Playstation 2 was first released back in March 2000 and the PS3 in 2006. Yet the PS2 did some of its best work just before the release of the PS3. Also if you where to compare, in graph form, the advances in technology (specifically graphics) between 2000 & 2006 and then 2006 and 2012 I am sure you will see a plateau in the latter when compared to the first. It is, IMO, entirely plausible that the PS3 can, and will, keep producing better and better looking/playing games until at least 2014 maybe even 2015.
