Yeah I imagine Nintendo is crapping themselves now that both Sony and MS have shown their hands and it blows the Wii U out of the water.

The main thing i took from the earlier Sony reveals were their platform being more open to developers. I got the impression they were going to allow all kinds of "mods" and "apps on the console from 3rd parties, as opposed to the very closed platform MS is showing off. I mean , sure TV integration, Netflix blah blah, but an open platform can and WILL have all that before MS even manage to push their next dashboard update out.

So i don't know how exactly Sony's platform is going to play out, but there was a distinct emphasis on catering for developers to get their stuff on the platform and allowing THEM to advance the PS4 as opposed to Sony themselves. Whereas we will have to wait for MS to release whatever app 4 years after we wanted it (like having a browser on your console, how long did it take MS to get that out?).

In terms of TV integration and all that, i will definitely still go for the platform that allows me to buy/install an app from some store written by devs that are rather good in that area (XBMC/Plex etc) as opposed to waiting for Microsoft to "allow" it on their platform.

This has been my main pet peeve with Xbox Live , i felt like i am using a Blackberry in an Iphone world.

The more open a platform, the more easily it get hacked and the more quickly information gets STOLEN, Remember the90 Million Credit cards info that got stolen from PSN, or has everyone forgotten about that already, also open platforms are more susceptible to mailicious content ie. Android has a shiitload of virusses whereas IOS have practically so few that it can be counted on one hand.

Don't confuse the ability to install content on a platform with the ability for devs to develop content for a platform. IOS is a million times more "open" than Xbox Live! How much can you develop for the Xbox Live right now ? Compare this to your virus-free iOS?

I fully expect Sony to at least monitor and control the flow of content via some sort of store or market place, so your point is somewhat moot here. I don't foresee the PS4 to be some PC where you just install your own flavored "ROM" with all kinds of emulators on it and end up playing Xbox games on it . I expect to see more content and games that was very difficult to deploy and sell on the console to be more available on the PS4 . It's kinda like World of Warcraft, i am hoping Sony was suggesting that they are making it EASIER for a game like WoW to appear on their platforms, whereas we know with Xbox it's a very tricky affair when it comes to updates and subscriptions etc.

Oh, in that respect the XBOX One OS is quite open for development. It's got a version of WindowsRT and a specific XBOX OS, and developers will be able to submit apps to the Windows OS that should be pretty easy to work on because of the code similarities to WinRT. From a development standpoint they're using Windows in a much stronger way.

I haven't really been following the news on the new consoles, I am far more a pc gamer than console.
I find it quite ironic how the microsoft shares are dropping after my boss started drooling in front of his screen last night while watching the launch watching the COD ghost footage etc.
If I were to go for any console it probably would have been Playstation anyway due to some of the game exclusives and its hardware capabilities.
With the way the market seems, I think I will still say Playstation over Xbox if I were to ever go console.

This is what i meant with Sony being more open to the developers ,articles already rolling in:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-05-23-curve-disappointed-in-xbox-ones-indie-approach

"Leaves the way clear for Sony to capture the most innovative market" says MD

Developer and publisher Curve has released a statement expressing its disappointment in Microsoft's approach to indie development on its new console, the Xbox One.

"XBLA was a trailblazer last generation, so it's sad to see Microsoft not announcing dedicated support for independent developers on the Xbox One," said MD Jason Perkins.

"Refusing to concentrate on easier submissions and discoverability leaves the way clear for Sony to capture the most innovative market in gaming right now."

Curve's most recent release was a PlayStation version of Mike Bithell's Thomas Was Alone, and is now focused on doing the same for Jasper Bryne's Lone Survivor.

"Sony's show of support for developers, including showing independent releases not only front and centre on their store front but also during the PlayStation 4 reveal is creating a more open, co-operative market for independent games to enter the living room on a level playing field."

After the Xbox One reveal GamesIndustry International spoke to a number of indie developers from Pocketwatch Games, Guacamelee and Spicy Horse Games and more to find our their reactions to the machine.

"As an indie developer, there was nothing in this presentation that would lure me into making a game for this console," said Martin Pichlmair of Broken Rules.

"The PS4 is much more tempting and so is the Wii U. From where I'm standing, it looks like iOS, Android and Steam stay the most interesting platforms for independent games for at least one more console generation. OUYA needs to prove itself before I can comment on it, but hiring Kellee Santiago gives them a lot of indie credibility."

Yeah but I think we need to wait for E3 to get some further detail on if they're going to re-implement an XBLA story. I do think Sony caters more for indie developers than MS.

Just like with what happened to the Wii right? Fact is, I have several consoles in my home. XBOX360, Wii, and a Wii U. Currently I don't see myself getting either the XBone or the PS4.

Microsoft made a BIG mistake when they announced that you need internet connectivity to play games and how pre-played games work.
I'm not surprised that Sony got an increase in stock price. The unveiling of the PS4 will determine whether Sony or Microsoft will win the hearts and pockets of gamers world wide.

Their stock failed even before these little gems hit the fan, investors don't really care about DRM and 2nd hand market, its the companies direction.

Yeah I agree with that. Investors could care less about these things. In fact Sony's stock has been gradually ticking downwards for the past week and Microsoft has broadly recovered.

Nope, not exactly like the Wii IMO. Unfortunately Wii U sales are terrible at the moment and the fact that games are being released really slowly isn't helping anything. Toys R Us are selling Wii U's for R1000, I doubt that is a sign that the console is doing well. I've also got a few consoles (PS3, X360 and Vita) and even for that price I don't see myself getting a Wii U because there is almost no games on the platform that I am interested in. PS4 on the other hand will have many games I want to play (Witcher 3, inFAMOUS Second Son, Killzone Shadow Fall, Deep Down, Drive Club, anything Naughty Dog develops, etc.) The only game I'm currently interested in on the Xbox is Forza 5, but I doubt I'll buy one because of the 24-hour internet thing, 2nd hand fee, mandatory kinect and the focus on TV.

The pricing for the Wii-U was too high. The speed at which the consoles have flown off of the shelves show that there is a real demand for the console but that people just aren't willing or capable of spending so much money on it. I don't think that problem is specific to South Africa and it could be hampering Wii-U sales all over the world. Nintendo might have realized this finally and have started to make a plan to create some positive momentum for their consoles. Even if they sell consoles at a loss they will recover the sales eventually through games and subsequent sales when the mood in the market has recovered.

To each their own though. I am crazy about my Wii-U and I have a ton of Wii games that I still need to get around to playing which it runs just perfectly.

Which games are you enjoying on the Wii U? I wish I could find a good reason to want it - honestly. I love Nintendo and I wish the Wii U was a real success.

The only reason Wii U's have flown off the shelves is because they dropped the price to R1000. I don't really think you can say there is a high demand for the console if they sold a lot of units at that price. Pretty much any gamer would buy any console for that price, it's a steal. I actually wanted to get one myself (because of the price and because I want to play Zombie U), but my local Toys R Us was already sold out when I got there.

ZombiU is an epic zombie survival game. Trine 2 is great fun. Tanks tanks tanks is a great arcade like game. I've only recently bought Nintendo land which apparently has some great games, but I haven't had time to play that yet.

And then something that is very important to me personally is all of my old guitar hero games which still work perfectly on my new console.

Yes I agree that R1000 is a steal, but in my opinion they would have seen the same amount of queues if they had sold it for R1500 or R2000. I bought my premium Zombi-U edition several months back from Bt Games at R3000, and that was also sold out incredibly fast.

There was a recent poll on MyGaming or MyBroadband on how much people are willing to spend on a next-gen console and by far the biggest portion of people said R2500-R3000, and then it tapered off. The Wii-U was on the wrong side of that scale and if the price had been closer to R3k on launch I am convinced they would have sold many more consoles.

I play most of my games on PC and then I bought the Wii just when it launched for multi-player party style games. It's been epic for that. I've been looking at the Wii-U since launch day but I wasn't willing to spend upwards of R4k+ on the console, so I waited until it crossed the border of what I was willing to pay for it. R3k for the premium zombiU edition crossed that border and I picked it up.
