I have to confess, I am not clued up on consoles, is this a normal thing, paying subscription to play online? On top of the high game prices?

I was considering entering the console market, but considering the expensive games and I have to pay for the simple pleasure of playing online, I have to say PC simply sounds better for a cash strapped government drone like me.

What is the benefits for paying for the online service?

Well for Sony at least it wasn't normal until they revealed changes to the PS4. Paying for multiplayer has been a thing for the Xbox and the 360 for ages.

Free games, game trials and beta testing, free themes and avatars (on the PS3) and save games backed up into the cloud. And multiplayer. Those are the only things that are behind Sony's paywall - everything else works without a PSN subscription.

If you're considering buying a console and can't afford to look at next-gen yet, buy a PS3 Slim along with a Playstation Plus subscription. There are a ton of games available for the PS3 and several franchises on the PS3 are incredible, not to mention a substantial second-hand market. Get a PS4 when you're ready.

The Sony Pay service does really seem worthwhile though. and if you have a kickass conenction, uncapped, an xbox and are willing to hustle, you can get netflix on your SA xbox (muuuuch better than dstv, but then again isn't everything?)

Generally online services like PS plus are really awesome

PS+ is really worth the money especially when you're cash strapped. They sommer give you games every month that you can use as long as your subscription is active. This month we got Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Remember Me, and a couple of Vita games. And it costs less than one game per year

I have a PS3 with PS= subscription and I'm not looking back. You get free games monthly and those games are AAA quality, not the old stuff Mixrosoft gives their Gold members. :)

Because my PS+ subscription has become a monthly budget item for me it makes sense to go to PS4 at some point in the future, probably late next year, maybe.

You might not get dedicated servers like with Xbox subs, but developers these days do that for their respective games if the demand is great.

As long as i have a console i will have ps+.
All the games that i wanted to buy for the last 2 years have been given to my via ps+ except for GoW 3. My wife gave that to me for my B-Day. now if only the ps4 was backwards compatible to digital ps3 games i would have tried to get the ps4 at launch.

I don't know why this is news now?

It was revealed at E3 that you need a PS+ sub to play multiplayer on PS4.

Yesterday, Nikkei reported on the PS+ monthly subscription cost, and it got picked up by newswires such as Reuters.

It seems that Nikkei thought the new monthly subscription of $10 was somehow interesting, and they did the math to work out that if you buy the yearly subscription, it costs you $5.

Guess the mainstream media only now caught on to what the gamers have known for months, what with the PS4 launch imminent.

I personally don't even care that they are starting to require PS+ for online gaming, it's such a huge value add that I would have it regardless.

It is amazing how little mainstream media knows about the gaming industry and gamers. That is why stereotypes exist and games are blamed for most every underage criminal/violent act.

Play station Plus is the best.Free games and Specials on other games. But the big thing is you need lot off cap(Uncapped is the best) and a good line speed.Iam only on 1 meg and Crysis 3 almost took 2 days to download
