Just hours after finding out that Supreme Commander won’t allow custom maps more damming news comes for the PC modding community. Electronic Arts today announced that the PC version of Battlefield Bad Company 2 will not have any modding tools released. This in turn means custom maps will not be a choice.

Electronic Arts have also decided they will not distribute the dedicated server software to the general public. The battlefield blog states - “There are many factors for why we have decided this with the biggest factor being security & integrity of our game & Dedicated Servers." This means you won't be able to host your own server using your own server hardware, however you will still be able to rent one - unlike in the much publicized Call of Duty 6 system. The vast majority of dedicated servers are rented by the admins, rather than run.

This may be a mid-way between getting rid of dedicated servers, and having the complete server package that previously was shared. If EA pulls it off correctly you can expect the system to be used across a range of future games. As with a lot of recent moves eliminating dedicated servers the core reason EA does not want to give out the dedicated server software is piracy. All the previous games have had the software hacked to be able to allow pirated copies play on private servers. However the software has been made and will be distributed to server hosts, so I would place a bet on it leaking out.

sigh.........

It's a good thing, Dedi-Servers to official providers only.
Less hackers in the end, since hacker don't have access to the server code.

Yeah in that regard its kinda cool. But the mod thing aint. Most of the competitions in FPS games are played with mods, like COD4 was Promod, WAW had Openwarfare mod, I think even BF2's agasa league used a mod.

iGame and SGS are reputable and only have legal servers. they should be able to get us dedicated servers?

Activision and IW should learn from this!

I played in the Battlfield2 leagues, Battlfield series don't use mods for competitve CLAN matches. The Game is designed to work for CLANs

What are the chances that SA will get a dedi server?

Well, SGS had to pay to have official ranked BF2 servers, for stats and stuff, so I have no doubt that they'll have BC2 servers. Other ISPs will follow.

yeah we never used mods in BF 2 clan matches. the game is pretty much all you need as standard :)

All this is about is that the dedi servers will not be available to every one. So no worries and to be honest I don't care for the modding tools.

sigh what do I bet you some of those guys at ea started out modding a game and now they are there in the top. And now they taking modding away from all the young ppl out there, that wants to be at the top.

But this game I really am looking forward too.

Well according to a recent twitter message from them they have or are going to have a local server up for the beta, so it stands to reason we'll have a local server for the full release. Hopefully SGS also manages to obtain licenses for a few.

I'm sorry I know this isn't as bad a MW2 but this is still fucking FAIL!
Why is everybody dumbing down games for PC? is it some fucking conspiracy?

/end rant

Can't we have more companies like S2. Kinda sucks that no one has taken notice what they doing with HoN, it's the near perfect solution for pc games.
