Agri SA believes South Africa needs a disaster, such as a drought, to force government to reflect on mining and food security, Beeld reported on Wednesday.

Rampant mining in South Africa was "eating the country's resources", Agri SA deputy president Theo de Jager reportedly said at the SA Water and Energy Forum's annual conference in Johannesburg.

Government would show its true colours if the country experienced a severe drought which threatened food security.

I am not sure I agree with Agri SA's sentiment. Imagine a disaster, coupled with a corrupt government... The officials will make sure they keep on living the standard of life they do, and the rest will die like flies.

Agri SA should be careful what they wish for. In my line of work I see regularly how some farmers are struggling to keep head above water and this is in good times.
This is not a rugby game. If disaster strikes, we don't have a bunch of reserves waiting on the bench to take over the farming from the farmer that has now lost everything. Every ex-farmer is one less food producer that won't necessarily be replaced immediately.
