South Africa will not run out of water in the next 100 years, Water Affairs Minister Edna Molewa assured MPs on Tuesday.

Opening debate on her 2013/14 budget in the National Assembly, Molewa dismissed what she referred to as "the current myth" about the country running dry.

"You must have heard, from one source or another, how South Africa will 'run out of water' in 2013, 2015, 2025, or 2030, depending on which news source you rely on.

Is this another of those moments in history where a person who can actively determine our destiny to a degree decides to stick her head in the sand? I think in the literal sense, yes, we won't run out of water, but we will run out of:

  • sufficient drinking water for the nation - we are polluting our rivers and dams at unprecedented levels through poorly maintained sewage treatment plants, acid mine water and general pollution
  • sufficient water by volume to meet the needs of an ever-increasing population as well as to cater for business and industry
Seriously, minister, please don't make this another Eskom moment in our history.
 
We're build desalination plants to supply water. Pity those require so much electricity...

btw what happened to that leaked report showing that there aren't enough water resources near Medupi?
