Thousands of South African gold miners went on strike Tuesday after wage talks broke down, threatening to cause millions of dollars in lost output in the troubled sector.

Powerful labour group the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) -- which represents the bulk of affected workers -- called for stoppages following its members' rejection of a 6.5 percent wage hike last week.

"Our members have not clocked in for the night shift, at several mines in the Carletonville area....read more here: South African gold miners go on strike

They just love to strike

Please shut down the mine, please shut down and let those idiots lose their jobs

And what about the thousands of people not on strike (office staff / local businesses) who will also lose their jobs if the mine shuts down?

A better approach that has worked in the past for some organisations is: double pay for non union non striking workers. It sends out a message very quickly. Only problem is it may trigger violent reactions from the striking workforce

The problem is that you don't want to give unions another reason to attack people, I just want a mine to shut down to show just how damaging this mentality that striking isn't harmfully to business. There is no silver bullet so I just a shock and awe attack on unions, they just love to screw over the people who have invested millions in a company.

My aunt is dealing with a union who want to strike over 1% they just rejected a 10% increase. They just love to fight for personal victories because at the end of the day they don't lose out in a strike, it's the workers and that's what pisses me off. You need something big to show that unions don't care about the workers.

This is what happens when the stability of trade and industry is put in the hands of people with no understanding of economics.
Same song and dance every time - dream some up random number knowing they won't get, settle on something far less (and in some cases less than the employer's original offer)....all the while the economy takes a dive, foreign investment plummets and foreign confidence dies.
But hey. Money falls out of the sky, didn't you know.

Well one of those union reps tried to apply for a job in the HR department, so during the interview they wanted to check his knowledge. So they asked him to define "labour dispute" as in the act, his reply was "eish, it's when something is wrong". Now tell me that guy deserves to be serving the interests of a nations working class, despite the fact he is still registered as a security guard in Limpopo
