Unfortunately it seems to be stuck in the green-lit abyss, so won't be on Steam.
You can fix that though by voting for it on Steam Greenlight:

Meanwhile you can grab it or the Demo on Desura:

So far it can be gotten from http://getgamesgo.com/product/rooks-keep @ $15 ($14 if pre-order)

Gorgeous level btw, and there's lots of maps. Couple that LAN or the ability to fight against 32 bots if you so desire.

PS. I expect to see this at every major LAN event here in SA. Don't disappoint.

Feature List:

Descend into a brutal tournament where factions of sinister knights and grotesque beasts battle for domination in bloody arena matches and furious melee brawls.

RRP: $14.99$13.49BUY NOW
Deathmatch. Multiplayer & AI. Chess. Decapitation.

Descend into a brutal tournament where factions of sinister knights and grotesque beasts battle for domination in bloody arena matches and furious melee brawls. Crush opponents with hammers and shields, rend flesh with razor sharp claws and slice off heads with swords and axes.
In Rooks Keep, players will maim their competitors in both a selection of deathmatch-arena game-modes such as 'Deathmatch', 'Team-Deathmatch', 'Conversion', 'Chess', 'Last-Man-Standing' and 'Combat Chess'. Play solo, jump into multiplayer matches, or add AI opponents to squash under-foot in both single and multiplayer. We even support 3rd party Chess engines.
The game is set in a uniquely styled fantasy world, where factions battle ceaselessly for your entertainment.

-Arena gameplay
Players will enter into a variety of game-modes, such as Deathmatch, Last-Man-Standing and Conversion(kill enemies to convert them to your team), and battle across a variety of maps with many available options and mutators.

-Melee combat
The focus of Rooks Keep is on the fantasy melee combat system, featuring quick and heavy attacks, parrying, blocking, dodging and special abilities and skills.

-Chess
Players can play in both Classic Chess and the unusual Combat Chess mode, where players have the opportunity to fight to retain their place on the board if attacked.

-AI/LAN/Online
Rooks Keep presents players with single-player solely against AI bots, LAN and online. Also supported are 3rd party Chess engines. Even hot-seat Chess is available.

-Unreal & mod support
Built on the Unreal Development Kit, Rooks Keep both looks great and offers mod support. Players will be able to use the included UnrealEd tool to build their own maps and mods.

@Eugene, will see soon enough although the actual question should be is it fun? I know I'll enjoy it, but I don't expect to see rave reviews from the paid mainstream metacritic reviewers like Gamespot if they ever review it.

Here's a small preview though, they planning on releasing a demo sometime so people can make up their own minds.

Question for me is: will MWEB and IS gaming have servers?

I recall chivalry: medieval combat being very short lived due to the lack of local servers :(

Question for me is: will MWEB and IS gaming have servers?

I recall chivalry: medieval combat being very short lived due to the lack of local servers :(

If the game can actually gather some support, even if it's from MWEB etc hosting local servers for them that would greatly increase to chance of this game being a success. If it cannot get support on a local level, it's gonna have a hard time, it just got released today and very few in South Africans even knows of it's existence. Due to the planned mod support etc, this game can just become better and better if people will allow it. It could use a little help when it comes to distribution/servers and marketing.

and whats the verdict, has anyone played it yet?

Just got home, might post a few screenshots, but first I'm gonna play it. They seems to have added more ways to buy it if everyone interested.

Also got an option where you could get 3 additional copies for R300.

Here's someone else's impression of Runestorm, although also a fan of ballistics...

Seriously no one here ever played Ballistics? It had freaken flameflowers and you could dual wield shotguns.

Barely opened game and already impressed:

That's the screen where you enter cd key, if you press cancel, you go to offline Singleplayer/LAN mode. No bloatware, no logging into steam beforehand, just run the Rooks Keep shortcut and start playing, with or without internet connection.

Note the red lock on top right, that means your "offline", if you click it you get prompt for the Cd Key. You can just conveniently press the paste button, and your entire CD key you copied, will be entered.

No DRM, no Bloatware. Simple CD key verification if you want to play online.

PS. Download of installer is 1Gig

Stuck on the Authentication though, will try to figure out that one later, probably to do with 3G...

Update: Vodacom 3G seems to be the culprit here, had zero problems with CellC 3G. Reported it to the Devs, hopefully Vodacom will help them sort out the problem, although if anyone else can confirm it too, that might help.

Just gonna post stuff here as I go along:

Update 1: I count 16 Deathmatch/Arena maps.
8 Chess based maps.

Update 2: They definitely included sufficient amount of options.

Update 3: Yes actual game is fun. The tutorial and Hint Screens are NB, a tried playing a game with just attacking mindlessly, got my ass kicked. Parrying and blocking is essential, that extra bit of attack speed gained from a successful parrying is the difference between you or the enemy getting in the hit which can throw you off balance which leads to death.

Update 4: No online server...I blame you guys for that one though. Will need to go hunt down players somehow. Want to try playing online, even if it's Chess for now.

Update 5:
Chess, you have full control of the camera, there's also a mod which you can toggle with 3 options on how to display your pieces. You can only display the character, the character with a 2d representation of what piece it is, or just a 2d representation, all of this in real-time. There's also an option in the menu where you can make corpses vanish after they've been killed to reduce the Gore clutter. Heck if you don't like the Gore there's also an option to turn that off. Game seems to have options for just about everything.

Using a gamepad with this game is kinda awesome, if you take something heavy like the Rook, your pad vibrates with every step.

I'm trying to take on a bot 1 vs 1 on Knight Difficulty. That's about 5/8 of the difficulties and I'm having an extremely hard time beating that bot. The combat has more depth than appears on the surface.

Not only must you take into account your position, you must react and counteract to every hit whilst trying to keep your guard up. If you keep parrying each other you both end up attack faster and having to react faster and one failed parry or early parry could open you up to getting killed by a power attack, which due to the increased attack speed won't get blocked in time.

Then you must also take into account the skill bonuses you can acquire like faster attack speed, or recovery via spending points. That means someone can keep playing as a rook and try to upgrade that piece instead of playing a Queen. Note that if you die you lose all those bonuses and the points you spend to get them.

So this game can get really hard if you want it to.

Does any one have contact with the devs? Because if its as good you guys say it is the devs could ask TB to feature it on his youtube video as part of the WTF is? as far as I know he's willing to do indie games sent to him.
