So with the rise of deep space sims such as the likes of Elite Dangerous and Star citizen, I'm becoming increasingly open to this genre after starting with FTL.

I guess it's a natural progression for wanting something more expansive and immersive than what FTL has to offer so I'm looking into playing either Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen? What game would you recommend with regards to immersion and realism of deep space flight and/or overall experience?

Do you think buying a 3D joystick and/or setting up a multiple monitor display is absolutely essential to playing these games?

I'd like to read your comments/stories on flight sims and joysticks.
What games do you play besides Microsoft Flight simulator? Would you recommend it to someone who might have a slight interest in it?

I wish I could test a setup and make my choice based on the experience but alas..

Guess I'm just gonna buy a cheapie joystick I saw over at takealot and see how it goes..

The Extreme 3D and and Attack 3 are both good entry level sticks. I'm using a single monitor setup with TrackIR and the Saitek X52. I would love to get the X55 at some point.

Most of the time i focus on DCS World (Flanker) and BMS Falcon. Both do require some time to learn, especially avionics and missiles/weapon systems to a degree.

I'll load up ED once in a while when i'm in the mood.
