Square-Enix are gonna use Unreal Engine 3

I'm not usually the one to care too much about graphics, but, err, the Unreal Engine 3 is getting kinda old, isn't it?

I'm guessing there isn't anything out there right now that is comparable in scope but better & UE4 isn't available yet. None of the other easily licensed engines compare on feature set & support structures.

The thing is just, it just feels as if the engine is really overused. At one point, every second game was based on UE3. I'm kinda tired of it. :p

Unreal Engine 3 is -everywhere-, that's it's main draw, I think. Heck, it's even supported by web-browsers now - so the sheer range and ease that you can reach with it makes it absolutely viable, no matter the age.

With Squeenix's proprietry stuff - like the Crystal Engine and Luminous above - the opposite is true; while they managed to port FFXIII over to Xbox well enough, I wouldn't be surprised if the engine didn't cause them a massive ball-ache, because it was initially built for PS3.

Unreal Engine 3 wouldn't have that problem.

Still, I stand by my inference that this is a sign that next-gen is still a ways away - unless this is for immediate-term stuff, and they're working on the next gen titles in the background, which may very well also be true.

If it ain't broke... Also its readily available and easy licenced. Plus the SDK is available for anyone to download.

I think we will only really start seeing new engines with the next gen of consoles.

Well yes and no.

The Unreal Engine 3 from Gears of War 3 is considerably different from the UE3 used in Gears 1. So even though it's the same engine the feature set has been expanded and upgraded constantly. Also most games now don't use any of the advanced features that these engines provide simply because they aim for what the consoles support and generally add little else for the PC.

Just check out the UE3 good Samaritan demo vid and you can see how much more UE3 can do compared to what is being produced.

Unreal Engine 3 is still under development i.e. they are actively making changes to it. It's a pretty impressive engine I must say. It's not Frostbite2 but it is actively supported and still does the job above and beyond te call of duty in the hands of an adept developer. I say kudos to SE for adopting it. Let's just hope the titles are of the same cloth as this tried and tested engine :3
