SSD for gaming. Decently priced.

Hey there guys. I'm looking to get an SSD for my pc as I hear that's a very good upgrade you can make in your PC as well as decrease loading times of a few games as well.

What SSD do you recommend? I don't think I want to spend more than R1200 on one unless there's a feature that's a must. I don't think I'll need a very big one as I will probably only have one game on it at a time, maybe too but I would like to future proof it as I'm sure games will get a lot bigger this gen.

I'd personally recommend the Samsung 840 Evo, you can get a 120GB model for about R1.2k. And as many people have said, Samsung and Intel SSDs are least likely to fail.

Haha after reading all that, I'm honestly even more confused. Is the Samsung Evo that addam suggested not good after all?

Oh and what would I be needing to install this SSD in my pc case? Do I need to be buying anything extra? What should I know when I have one installed? I'll be using Windows 7 :)

It will work but you won't get the maximum speed out of it since it's SATA II 3.0GB/s not SATA III 6.0Gb/s

Also, are you going to do a clean install on the SSD or a mirror from your current drive? - I would rather just do a clean install mirrors tend to cause problems sometimes.
 
Hmm, that is an interesting read-up. Though it's worth noting that the Samsung started failing after 100TB of data was written to it, much more than I'd ever expect to write to my 120GB SSD :p

Will it at least be faster than my normal HDD? Might make me rethink the purchase until the end of the year then when I get a new PC.

Clean install. Been meaning to do one anyway. Do I need to do anything special to windows 7 for the SSD?
 
I would still not get an SSD for gaming alone. However, with the way they speed up the entire system, yes, it's worth it.

That being said, I have always used Corsair's range, and none have failed me.

What is your opinion on that article that Tank posted? It seems there that the Evo doesn't do as well as other drives.

As I've stated quite a few times I don't bother with reviews anymore.
I've personally seen the dark side of reviews and I know for a fact that certain websites are paid to score certain products higher than others even if the performance is worse or whatever the case may be. I test enough products to make up my own mind :)

Also why so many people trust me for advice and to let me build their pc's.

I will agree with The Joker here, the EVO 840 is awesome, decently priced and has given me zero problems as of yet. I even got myself another unit (500gb) for more space. I run a program called Hard Disk Sentinel to monitor my HDD's and SSD which has in the past given me ample warning when a HDD is about to fail.
 
Heh. I only posted that because of the way i do things. Get as much info as possible then make the best informed choice
