For those who haven't pledged to the ever growing $100mil+ fund but are interested in checking it out, you can try out Star Citizen this week. (Source PCGamer)

Here's what's included for free flyers:
Star Citizen Alpha 2.1.2 – Also known as Crusader or the “mini-PU,” this is the nucleus of the world we’re building! Featuring multiple space stations and environments, scripted missions, places to explore and more, Alpha 2.1.2 is your first look at a much larger universe!
Arena Commander – Arena Commander is a ‘game within a game’ that we’ve used to develop our flight mechanics and ship combat balance. Take on human opponents or an AI swarm in single seat fighter.
Social Module – Interact with other players while you explore our first landing zone, ArcCorp! The Social Module is intended as a starting point for our world building.

If you want you can use my referral code: STAR-4BTR-B23R

I dont find anything saying it's free now?

EDIT: nvm, super unintuitive process.

Yea, once you register you have to ignore everything asking you to buy the game and just go to download.

I saw a banner on the top of the RSI page last week. Guess they removed it for some reason.
use my code for signups XD in the SC Official Thread. Too late now, but for anyone else seeing this later.

27GB's of downloading to go. At least the download is maxing out my 4meg line so it'll be done for me to test out tomorrow.

Yea I got about 15 left to go from last night :/

bleh, raping my cap this early in the month never bodes well...

You know what I wasn't going to, but this is too interesting to pass up. Going to try it out myself. :D

bah damnit... the launcher was raping my bandwidth to an extent I couldn't even browse, so I stopped it till I went to bed. Alas, I forgot to start it last night :(

Lol yeah that thing hogs every single piece of bandwidth that it can find. There is a limiter though, for future reference.

Be glad it uses all the bandwidth. With the previous launcher you struggled to get more than 120 KB/s no matter what line you had. So I'm just glad they fixed that. Do you know how long it takes to download 27GB at that speed? :D

Loool ouch, those must have been tough times. XD glad I never had to experience that, I joined in the better days.

So I got in some game time - Word of warning the flight tutorial is bugged at the moment - every now and then game freezes for 2-5 seconds rendering it rather unplayable. This is no matter what settings you have.

Arena Commander free flight and combat modes work well though. I was having fun taking on wave after wave of the vanduul swarm.

The buggy tutorial has become a bit of a irritating issue in some parts of the community. Along the lines of why bother encouraging new players join with things like free fly weeks when the thing that many of them are going to head to first is such a poor reflection of the game?

The devs do acknowledge that the flight tut is bugged as heck and have said that it'll be worked on, but right now it's not a huge priority. I think a lot of CIG's resources are being pushed into getting Squadron 42 ready for release.

That said, glad to hear you got some time slaying alien scum :) in Arena Commander. Have you had a chance to check out Port Olisar and the mini-universe yet? Fair amount of mini-missions to do in there. Should give you a reasonable idea of the SC game play possibilities.

If you do, here's a solid quick start guide with some useful keyboard commands and general tips on making the most of your visit: https://as.reddit.com/r/starcitizen..._citizen_alpha_20_universe_quick_start_guide/

Totally agree with that since the tutorial was my first port of call, was about to give up on trying the game out further. I went to some planet - not sure if it was Olisar but all you could do there was walk around as far as I could tell. Will check out the guide though. After playing attack waves I'm keen to play again, it reminded me a bit of Starlancer which had some fun dogfights. I really dig the decoupled mode, with a bit of practice I'm sure I could become a space drift king :D
